Recent Quebec City CLEP History of the United States II: 1865 to the Present Tutoring Session Notes
Reviewed the remainder of SAT Practice Test #1. She scored a 530R/600M/500W split and was somewhat satisfied with it, but hopes to improve to ultimately score in the 1800s or 1900s. She repeatedly eliminated the questions down to 2 answer choices, but unfortunately chose the wrong answer most of the time, so I believe her scores can easily improve in the future. I focused on vocabulary, short reading passages, functions (especially parabolas), geometry, and sentence revisions because these are her weakest areas. I was proud to see her applying some of the grammar rules and math concepts I covered in previous sessions on this practice test. Her work ethic will take her far.
Today the student and I switched gears a bit and began looking at the English portion of the exam. Before we began the student expressed that this was his strongest subject, which is great because confidence will serve the student very well. As we worked through the exam, he correctly answered most of the questions. We went through each of the questions, and I had the student explain to me why the correct answer was correct and why the incorrect answers were incorrect. I want the student to move away from the phrase "because it sounds right," and learn the vocabulary of grammar so that he can answer questions with certainty, as well as be able to defend his answers when there isn't one answer that jumps out as "sounding right." Overall, the student seemed receptive to this approach and I am excited to see how he improves. Keep up the good work!
We split our time between science and math today, first addressing some of the issues that came up in her last practice test. A decent number of her wrong answers with science had to do with simple thing like keeping track of numbers or reading more carefully, so I think she's in a good position to continue improvement. There were a few problems relating to general science knowledge though, so we worked through that too. For math, we went over the five problems she missed and then had some lessons in logs, graphing equations, and percentages.
We worked through three math sections, identifying ways to arrive at the correct answer including working backwards, plugging in, and process of elimination. Much of the SAT math is logic rather than complex mathematics, and requires being very meticulous about the details (the range given, recognizing you've solved for x but they've asked for x+2, etc.). Tomorrow we'll focus on the writing section.
We focused on the students fast approaching application deadline for his new school (7/23) and began crafting his application essay. The prompt: If you could meet any leader or historical figure, who would you meet and why?
We also went over the basics of the SSAT and the SAT and how to craft the essays for those particular tests. He will be taking the SSAT on 7/25
