3rd Grade Tutoring FAQ
By third grade, students are expected to have mastered the skills of reading and writing, allowing them to develop further and combine these skills in language arts. Teachers begin to focus attention toward multiplication and division in mathematics, sometimes to the exclusion of reviewing addition and subtraction concepts with which your child may still struggle. Elementary education, perhaps more so than any other tier of academia, is extremely hierarchical in nature. Course concepts require mastery of previous material, building upon those foundations to develop new applications and fundamental understandings. For instance, counting must precede addition which must precede multiplication. Knowing the alphabet must precede phonics which must precede grammar. Building the proper basic skills is a crucial part of initial elementary schooling.
By the end of third grade, there are many concepts your child will be expected to know. In math, your child will need to know how to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers by single digit numbers. They will also be expected to understand and work with simple decimals and fractions, as well as be able to manipulate and read basic graphs. In reading, your third grader will need to know the importance of having and using a prewriting strategy. They will also need to understand the formula to the writing process and know how to write for a specific audience. Additionally, they should develop an expanded vocabulary and be able to read with fluency.
If you are concerned that your child has fallen behind in his or her class work or has become disinterested in the material covered, do not delay in seeking outside assistance! Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a third-grade tutor to help keep your child's educational trajectory on track. We can help you connect with a tutor who is best suited to your child's academic interests, areas of weakness, learning aptitudes, and even personality. This process gives your tutor the best opportunity to create customized lesson plans around your child's specific needs. Tutoring sessions can be held in person at the location of your choosing or even face-to-face through an online platform.
Perhaps your student struggles to grasp the underlying principles of multiplication or demonstrates need in his or her reading capabilities. Personalized third-grade tutoring allows your child's instructor to develop practice material designed to cater to his or her interests. Such assignments can help keep your child engaged in academia and make learning an inherent and applicable part of your child's life and interests. The assessment-based nature of public education can sometimes stifle student creativity and imagination. Help keep your child's mind open while still developing the key skills needed for his or her success in future schooling.
There are numerous benefits of hiring your student a third-grade tutor. Your child will get the one-on-one attention they need to help them succeed. The traditional classroom setting doesn't allow for much individual attention. Your child's tutor will focus solely on them during sessions. Another benefit of hiring a private tutor is the fact that your child will gain back their confidence and self esteem. Within just a few short sessions, your child will begin to grasp concepts that they were struggling with. You will be surprised at how quickly your child starts showing confidence in their work once they start working with the tutor. Additionally, your child's tutor can teach them valuable study skills, which will not only benefit them immediately but will in the future as well.

Recent 3rd Grade Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I worked on his science project. He needed to come up with several facts about Mars so we researched it and transferred appropriate facts onto his paper. We also designed his model for the project.
Student read well.
Reviewed multiplication skills.
Needs to work on 2, 3, 4 during weekend.
Student was able to complete 26 facts. Next goal is 30 in 2 minutes.
Today was our first session. We focused on Math (division and checking division answers using multiplication). Practice included word problems and non-word problems. The student seems to be great at math but struggles somewhat with division and multiplication involving 6's, 7's, and 8's. We also worked on Spanish comprehension, watching and discussing a story in Spanish, and had a brief conversation in Spanish. Next time I hope to extend the length of time we converse in Spanish. The father showed me the student's report card which was quite positive. I did not leave him with extra practice. No concerns to report.
For the first 50 minutes we went over math. We are focusing on her word problems, because she is quite good at simple arithmetic. We also started practicing division. The last 10 minutes she practiced reading aloud and I quizzed her on the plot and reading comprehension.
Today was the first day I met with the student, and she is very bright and a fast learner. I used a few workbooks that she had from 2nd grade to gauge where she is at as of today. I believe she is definitely ready to work on 3rd grade material, so I taught her about the area of certain polygons today and gave her some example questions I made myself. It was a bit difficult at first, but she understood the concept fairly well. I will recheck her understanding of the topic in our next scheduled session. Since we started with 3rd Grade Math, I gave her homework on writing and reading skills in her workbooks. I also gave her mother a link to a tool I've used in the past to tutor elementary school children.
I began with quizzing the student on her 2's for multiplication. She did fairly well, but needs more practice. I then began reviewing everything we have done so far this summer from what she missed on her end of course exam for 3rd grade. The student is getting much better at knowing whether the problem is asking for addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, but still struggles with multiplying and dividing. The student should spend more practice time on her multiplication tables. No concerns from this session.
