The student had just had a math test that day and received no new material so we focused on working on her science homework which concentrated on evolution and the major contributors to the theory of evolution and how they influenced Charles Darwin. She is doing very well in math and in science as well as world history. Session lasted one hour.

I conducted a tutoring session with the student on Biology. He wanted help reviewing material for a test on the processes of mitosis and meiosis, but more specifically he wanted clarification on the differences between mitosis and meiosis. Overall, he understood the information very well and knew inside-and-out what was occurring in each phase of both processes, but he was a bit confused on the differences between the two. The session consisted of reviewing diagrams in his textbook, notes, as well as using my own biology workbooks I brought with me. We also went over review/practice questions at the end of the chapter.

In our first session, we reviewed past exams and quizzes in preparation for an upcoming mid term. We covered plant life cycle, plant structure, cell phylum, and mammals. The student's midterm will cover chapters 1-6 in his textbook as well as lecture notes. He has trouble engaging in class and his lecture notes are not very detailed. His teacher has note handouts available to the class. I suggested that in the future he print the class notes prior to the lecture and then add his own notes to the handout as a way to remain on topic and keep track of concepts that are not clear. We also discussed reading the text and watching the corresponding PowerPoint from the textbook prior to going to class as ways to be better prepared. We ended the session with making a plan on how to study for the pending midterm. I asked the student to rewrite the lecture notes from the plant section (as this was his most challenging section during exams) and this time watch the textbook animations for each section to really ground the material. He also agreed to use commute time to review biology flashcards and to find a video for any concept that he felt he just wasn't quite understanding still. We will be reviewing the cards and concepts he misses consecutively at our next session.
