Criminology Tutor • +10 Subjects

I am a graduate of Walden University where I received a Master's in Psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Criminal Justice. I have also obtained a Master's in Healthcare Administration with a focus in education. Currently, I perform investigations in the criminal justice field while I also work as a university professor teaching criminal justice. I have recorded textbooks for the visually impaired and tutored children whose parents lived in a homeless shelter where I volunteered. I also worked with some of the parents by helping them with budgeting, completing college essays, and helping some to improve their English skills (as I am a certified ESL instructor). While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Criminal Justice, Literature, and Psychology. One of the most important skills that I can aid students in developing is writing and thinking critically regarding the information they receive as they continue to grow throughout their educational careers. I must encourage and prepare students to be contributors in society both locally and globally as well as inspiring the need for continued research that expands conceptual understanding aimed at making a difference. I am a firm advocate of education because it has the potential to improve an individual's quality of life while both broadening and advancing one's exposure and opportunities.

I graduated from Clark University where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy and played Varsity Baseball. Upon graduation, I joined Teach For America and returned home teaching at a public charter school in Brooklyn, NY. After this, I took the LSAT and decided to help others to achieve the same success on the LSAT that I did. I teach all aspects of the LSAT and enjoy each and every section. As a philosophy major, I enjoyed using my brain in a logical manner and have found there to be fun in tutoring the LSAT. I believe that the LSAT can and should be a fun test to study for and strive to make sure that it is enjoyable for all of my students. I prefer to just serve as a guide so the lessons that students get stick with them more. I do this by asking questions and providing enough scaffolding to have my student create their own "Aha!" moment. When I'm not tutoring, I love everything New York sports and creating new dishes to enjoy with friends and family.

I am a current senior at USC studying neuroscience and computer science. I have tutored students in a wide range of materials from standardized tests (SAT and ACT), to various high-school subjects (including Physics, Chemistry, Algebra, and Geometry).I scored in the 99th percentile of both the ACT and SAT, and I strive to help every student I tutor gain the necessary skills and habits to achieve whatever score they are aiming for. Standardized testing and school in general can be a huge stress on students, and as a tutor I want to help mediate some of that stress by not only better preparing you as a student, but giving you whatever advice I may have to offer to help you feel better about your educational journey.

Abstract Algebra Tutor • +9 Subjects

I am a graduate of Western Michigan University where I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics, specifically Graph Theory. I taught for over 20 years in academia at various institutions, including Grand Valley State University, the University of Vermont, and Illinois State University. Now, I am an editor for a large mathematical database located in Ann Arbor, MI. While I love what I do as an editor, I find that I am missing the one-on-one interactions with students that I found to be the most gratifying when I was teaching. I enjoy tutoring a broad range of subjects and feel strongly that everyone can be successful in mathematics. In my interactions with students, I strive to present things in a variety of ways to facilitate understanding and connection. I am available to tutor most afternoons and evenings and some weekends. In my spare time, I enjoy yoga, biking, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

I have been a tutor with Varsity since December 2016. I tutored a number of students taking high school courses such as IB physics, Regents algebra, Advanced Placement Calculus AB and beginning Java programming.I have always been a good student in science and math. I have a Bachelors degree from Brown University in physics and a Masters in computer science from New York University. I have worked in the New York City school system teaching high school algebra. During college I taught Advanced Placement physics as a freelancer. Most recently I worked for an Internet marketing company in Manhattan, testing software. In tutoring, I like to present topics that have recently been taught in class, but also go over solving problems. I feel students should not wait until the last minute to start tutoring. If theres only time for 2 tutoring sessions before the final exam, it may be too late to excel. Also, I prefer if the student tells me the topic to go over in the session ahead of time. Then I can prepare a lesson on that topic. Im always willing to answer questions before starting, so you can know how I can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Astrochemistry is the study of chemical processes and compositions in space—from interstellar clouds and star-forming regions to planetary atmospheres and the origin of life's building blocks. Understanding astrochemistry helps us answer fundamental questions about how stars and planets form, what chemical elements exist throughout the universe, and how complex organic molecules emerged.

Many students find astrochemistry challenging because it requires connecting chemistry fundamentals (like molecular structure and bonding) with astrophysics concepts (like stellar evolution and radiation). A tutor can help you build these bridges, showing how the chemistry you learn applies to real cosmic phenomena rather than treating it as abstract theory.

The most common struggles include: visualizing molecular structures and reactions in space environments where conditions are radically different from Earth (ultra-cold temperatures, near-vacuum conditions, intense radiation), understanding equilibrium and reaction rates in extreme settings, balancing complex chemical equations relevant to stellar nucleosynthesis, and connecting observational data (spectroscopy) to underlying chemical processes.

Many students also struggle with unit conversions specific to astronomy (parsecs, Kelvin scales, optical depth) and applying quantum chemistry concepts to explain emission spectra from distant objects. Personalized tutoring helps you develop mental models for these abstract concepts and practice applying them to real research problems.

Astrochemistry tutoring goes beyond memorizing reactions—it focuses on developing scientific reasoning skills specific to how chemistry operates in space. Expert tutors help you understand why certain reactions dominate in nebulae but not in Earth's atmosphere, how to interpret spectroscopic data to identify chemical species, and how thermodynamic principles apply to star formation and planetary chemistry.

A strong astrochemistry tutor also helps you think like an astrochemist: asking questions about observational evidence, working through complex multi-step reactions, understanding reaction kinetics under extreme conditions, and connecting lab-scale chemistry to cosmic scales. This builds both content knowledge and the scientific thinking skills you'll need for upper-level coursework or research.

When you connect with a tutor through Varsity Tutors, you'll receive personalized 1-on-1 instruction tailored to your specific challenges—whether that's mastering equilibrium chemistry in cold molecular clouds, interpreting astronomical spectra, understanding nucleosynthesis pathways, or preparing for exams. Sessions typically involve working through problems together, building visual models of molecular structures and reactions, and practicing application of concepts to real astronomical scenarios.

Expect your tutor to help you move beyond memorization toward deeper understanding. They'll ask questions to reveal gaps in your reasoning, guide you through the scientific method as applied to astrochemistry problems, and help you develop study strategies that stick. Regular sessions create accountability and give you a space to ask questions before small gaps become major obstacles.

Yes—tutors can help you develop exam strategies specific to astrochemistry, from organizing your knowledge of reaction pathways and reaction mechanisms to practicing how to interpret spectroscopic data under exam conditions. They can also help you work through complex problem sets, understand why certain answer choices are correct, and build confidence with calculations involving unit conversions and equilibrium expressions.

For research projects, a tutor can help you understand the chemistry underlying your research question, interpret your data in the context of astrochemical principles, and develop the scientific reasoning skills you need to make meaningful contributions. Whether you're preparing for a quiz, midterm, final exam, or independent project, personalized instruction helps you approach astrochemistry with both confidence and genuine understanding.

A solid foundation in general chemistry (atomic structure, bonding, equilibrium, thermodynamics) and basic physics (light, radiation, heat transfer) provides the essential background for astrochemistry. Many students also benefit from some familiarity with astronomy concepts, but this isn't always required—it depends on your specific course.

If you're feeling weak in any foundational area, that's where a tutor can help most. Rather than struggling through an astrochemistry course with gaps in general chemistry knowledge, a tutor can help you fill those gaps quickly and show you how they connect to astrochemistry. This targeted review saves time and makes your astrochemistry coursework much more meaningful.

Astrochemistry involves many abstract concepts—molecular clouds you can't see, reactions happening at temperatures near absolute zero, and chemical processes that take millions of years. Personalized tutoring helps by using visual models, analogies, and step-by-step reasoning to make these concepts concrete. A tutor can draw out structures, walk through reaction mechanisms, and connect them to observable phenomena like stellar emission spectra.

One-on-one instruction also lets your tutor adapt explanations to how you learn best. If you're a visual learner, they'll emphasize diagrams and molecular models. If you learn through problem-solving, you'll practice applying concepts repeatedly. This personalized approach—unavailable in large lectures—accelerates your understanding and helps abstract ideas become intuitive.
