Biology Tutor • +5 Subjects

I am a North Carolina State University graduate with a degree in Biology and I am currently working on my masters in Comparative Biomedical Sciences. During my time as a student, I have focused on pursuing my goal of becoming a veterinarian and have developed a deep passion for science and medicine in the process. I am passionate about helping students discover scientific concepts for themselves and grow into independent, confident learners. As a graduate student, I worked as a teaching assistant for two college-level biology courses and specifically enjoy teaching cellular and molecular biology. I currently tutor high school and early college students looking to improve their understanding of scientific concepts. I love helping students set attainable goals for themselves and track their progress as they tackle skills and gain understanding of complex topics. Outside of the classroom, you can find me traveling the U.S. (and the world), spending time with friends and family, and running with my pup, Oliver. I'm excited to meet you and can't wait to help you reach your academic goals!

Biology Tutor • +8 Subjects

I recently graduated from the University of Washington with a double major in Chemistry and Biology. While there I would help my fellow students understand harder subjects such as physics or genetics. My classmates would often ask me for help and I was more than happy to do so. I have experience teaching younger students as well. During my sophomore and junior year, I was a teacher's assistant and taught middle school-aged children math. I gave presentations on my study abroad trip to Peru to students attending college, high school, middle school, and elementary school. I would adjust my presentation to match my audience's ages by recalling what I was learning at their age and adjusting the language to be age suitable for the audience. I would like to continue my education to get a Master's degree in Genetic Counseling in order to become a licensed genetic counselor. Genetic counseling began in 1979, making it a relatively new field in medicine. I'm interested in being a pioneer in science and this would be a fantastic way to do so. I like to tell people I'm a better Biologist than Chemist. My interest in biology was started when I was a young kid and had a major interest in macrofauna but as I got older I realized I wanted to study more complicated subjects. I would say the following are my strongest areas of knowledge at the college level: macro and microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry. I also have experience with teaching people college-level introductory physics and trigonometry. These are the highest level of education I have either taught or feel comfortable teaching. I am willing to offer advice and any possible help I might be able to give in any of the other subjects I have taken. I have taken both the ACT and the GRE. I studied for the GRE and can help with preparing for the GRE. My favorite subject to tutor is genetics. When I took my genetics class, I was surprised by how easily I understood and recalled things. Students came to me to help them understand the subject. I enjoyed helping them because it showed me what I knew and what I needed to work on. It was also fun to figure out ways to help students understand the material the way I understood it. I encourage students to be as hands-on with their subjects as possible. When learning Spanish verbs I made clay figures acting out the verbs. When I learned the Krebs cycle, I created a little puzzle to help me memorize where the different organelles and proteins went. To learn mitosis and meiosis in Genetics we had to act out a dance to show how the chromosomes separated during both. In my experience, I think teachers should strive to make making learning as fun as possible to help students focus and stay interested in important subjects, although I'm not against most traditional teaching methods and I strongly encourage students to take as many notes as possible. Outside of academics, I enjoy the outdoors. I like to go on hikes and long walks. I did crew in high school and would like to get back on a team if the possibility ever arose.

My name is Amrit and I am excited to support and guide you while you rock your way to meeting your learning goals! I have a degree in science. My journey of helping others started more than 6 years ago. I started tutoring when I was in college and soon I realized I loved helping classmates find their aha! moment. It was satisfying! Since then I have continued to work on this path and have worked in a classroom and online setting for about 5 years. Having struggled with some subjects like biology, while I was in my first year, also gives me a perspective on tutoring. I appreciate the experts who helped me succeed and because of this, I have a passion for helping others.

Biology Tutor • +8 Subjects

I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Montclair State University in January 2020. I am now working towards a Master of Science in Biology at The University of North Florida, where my graduate research will focus especially on microbiology and molecular biology. As a research assistant at The New Jersey Center for Water Science and Technology, I taught a summer biology course for incoming college freshmen majoring in STEM fields. I tutor high school and college Biology, including a variety of more advanced college courses in the biological sciences. Genetics is an especially exciting field, and so it is my favorite subject to tutor. My motivation to tutor students comes from my own experience in college. When I first decided to major in Biology, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get through the required math courses. Algebra had never been my friend, and I feared that struggling with math would prevent me from pursuing my love of biology. But with the help of passionate professors and teaching assistants and a lot of hard work, of course I earned A's in my math courses, and discovered that I actually enjoyed the classes! I want to show students that there is no need to shy away from a subject that doesn't come easily to them; being challenged by a course doesn't mean you can't excel in it.When it comes to mastering difficult material, my philosophy is: be active, not passive. For instance, if a student does not know the answer to a question, my solution is not to just give them the answer and move on. Instead, I'll ask the student to make some logical guesses based on their knowledge of a more fundamental concept. This way, I can guide the student towards the correct answer, and help build meaningful connections between different concepts in biology. When I am not in class or at the lab, there's a good chance you'll find me drawing or painting. Making art has always been one of my favorite ways to express my thoughts and feelings. Spending time in nature is also very important to me, and someday I'd like to hike the entire Appalachian Trail!
