ACT Writing Tutoring review by Evan in Portsmouth, VA
The student completed the full practice ACT exam, scoring a 24 on Science, 25 on Reading, and 30 on Math. Reading and Science are particularly difficult in regards to timing. We extensively discussed the questions from the Science section, working through the logic behind each best answer. We focused on reading the question carefully, not overthinking, underlining key parts of the question, looking for general patterns in the data, and using the answer choices effectively to know where to look. We also reviewed a few of the questions he had from the Math section. He will complete another practice exam from his ACT prep book and we will work through the Reading section in-depth next time.

We focused on the English section, covering the reorganization of content and word usage. This is the section we will focus on the most regarding content. We also covered strategies for reading and science, as well as discussing how to approach various types of questions in each subsection. Repetition will be the biggest factor in success.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Jordan in Portsmouth, VA
The student and I did a math portion of the ACT together. She is pretty good at the math section, and because of this I encouraged her to try the SAT (after the ACT is over of course) since the SAT does not have a science portion, and the science portion is where she struggles the most. There were a couple of tricky math problems that we went over together and talked about, but for the most part she had no problem at all with the math section. We also talked about recommendation letters and which teachers to ask for them.

At our Thursday session Student 1, Student 2 and I talked about the writing section on the ACT. Although it is optional, they are both planning on taking it. We discussed the specific things that the scorers look for, and practiced analyzing arguments and coming up with our own fourth perspectives.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Meghan in Portsmouth, VA
The student and I started the session by working on the English section of the ACT. We went through the correct usage for commas, including the Oxford comma. We also went through verb tenses and identifying the correct verb tense. I had her go through passages and answer the related questions. She had some trouble with interrupting clauses, so we spent time going over this concept. We spent the first 75 minutes working on English content and strategy. We spent the final 45 minutes working on the reading section. I had her do questions from the social studies/history, prose fiction, and science sections. She needs to practice on her own to improve her pace. We'll continue to work on the reading to identify the order in which she should do the questions.

ACT Writing Tutoring review by Paige in Portsmouth, VA
We kept working on the math section that we began last session. I also did basic rules of some geometry concepts with him because that is what he seems to struggle with the most. We also did a science section, and he scored a 25 on this. I want to work on timing with this section to make sure that he can score this high within the time given. We will continue this in the next session.
