Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
We spent the majority of our session factoring difference of squares and sum/difference of cubes equations. The student seemed somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of new material she's been learning in class, but once we began to do practice problems I think she surprised herself with how much she does know. I advised her to memorize the most common cube roots to help her complete the difference of cubes problems. I also emphasized going back to the general expression if/when she encounters a difficult problem. In the last 15 minutes we began reviewing how to solve quadratic equations. The student has a test next Monday. In preparation, I assigned her general review of factoring all types of polynomials. The student seems anxious for her test, so my hope is that with practice and another session she'll gain confidence with the material.
To begin our second session, the student and I went over the practice test that she did for homework. We then did some SAT-style verbal analogies, to see if she was more comfortable with those than with sentence completions and maybe the SAT would be a better test for her. We decided it was too her advantage to do the big test next month. Once we settled on the test, we practiced an Upper Level "Verbal Reasoning" section, making note of the vocabulary that she didn't yet know. Finally, we went over the mathematics questions that she had missed on her practice test, using the errors to introduce some algebra concepts, such as FOILing.
Today I worked with the first student on solving one-step equations with a variable. He was very confused about how to approach these problems at the beginning of the session, especially when there was a fraction involved, but he picked up the concept very quickly and was able to do most of his homework with minimal help. The second student only had a couple of questions on how to approach his work with fractions. We worked on these questions and then looked over his homework.
