French Tutors

I will be attending Washington University School of Medicine in the fall. I can help with basic math, all the pre-medical sciences, and test prep for the ACT, SAT, or MCAT. My tutoring experience ranges from middle school math to ACT prep. I was a teaching assistant for Laboratory of Neurophysiology last semester, and my student evaluations emphasized my ability to be organized and clear, as well as explain information in multiple ways that made it easier to understand. When it comes to the sciences, there are always many ways in which to conceptualize a problem.

I am a very experienced peer tutor, with many years of helping junior high, high school, and undergraduate students in a variety of areas. These include: foreign languages and English, social science and linguistics. I have a passion for these subjects, and a strong ability to effectively educate others in them..

I can tutor students in Latin from the very basic to highly advanced levels. I have a strong background in Latin and Greek having completed graduate level coursework in both of them as an undergraduate. As a tutor, I try to bring my strong background in Latin as well as my enthusiasm for the language to my clients. There's nothing more contagious for a student than a teacher who loves what they are teaching! I also try to bring creativity to the classroom and use different methods of learning for different types of learners such as a Latin declension game. While teaching a language like Latin, I also try to use original texts and more modern ones such as Harry Potter in Latin as a way to hook a student's interest and keep them learning rather than becoming discouraged by the sometimes intimidating leaps and bounds of Latin grammar. I also as president of the U of A Classics club work integrally with Classics professors and faculty at the university to bring the Classics to life in a variety of ways.

I have experience with ELL as I've done a practicum in Iowa and just returned from France after teaching English for a year in a French high school. I would really appreciate the opportunity to work part-time in the field that I am studying. I'm energetic and very diligent and very proficient in the French Language.

I have extensive volunteer experience; I taught an ESL class for adults while living in New Orleans; at the end of the term, 100% of my regularly attending students elected to sign up for more classes. I am a recently returned Peace Corps Volunteer; I spent over a year working in a small school in Namibia (Southern Africa) teaching English, Math, and Computer Skills in a resource-poor environment. I am enthusiastic and creative, and am constantly scanning the latest pedagogical literature to keep abreast of current teaching theories. My strengths lie in verbal expression, although I have a background in science (especially biology) as well.

I graduated from The University of Rochester in 2010 with dual Bachelors Degrees in History and Political Science. I live in Suwanee, GA and only commute to Athens two days out of the week. When I'm not hitting the books, I'm usually either working out (to relieve stress from the books) at the gym, chugging unhealthy (and counterproductive) amounts of bubble tea, or hanging out with friends. I take my studies very seriously, but I'm also a firm believer that one can't go far without healthy doses of relaxation. That being said, I always make sure I'm prepared ahead of schedule so that I can fit in these little doses of R&R (rest and relaxation), and I try to instill that work ethic in my students as well.

I am a former classroom teacher at a wonderful Houston charter school, as well as several different schools around the world. I have worked with students from kindergarten to middle school in many different subject areas. I love the learning process, and figuring out how to best design a lesson for a specific student so that learning is fun, engaging and meaningful. For me, learning is not about drilling memorization facts. My ultimate goal with students is to make a connection with them and bring alive pre-algebra, phonics, the questioning mechanics of the SAT - whatever the student is learning.

This is why I think learning to write effectively is the most important skill for all students; it is crucial for all fields and areas of study. I have taught a diverse range of students at different universities over the past 8 years, and I have found that in all instances, good writing and reading skills lead to greater success in college because of how these skills sharpen students' critical thinking. I specialize in helping students with academic writing--essays, term papers, reports, large and small projects--from the brainstorming stage through drafting, organizing, and revising. I have taught several classes especially for ESL students and understand the particular needs of non-native speakers in revising for tone, vocabulary, and style. Also, World Literature is one of my great loves and I have taught several courses on Literature, ranging from the Epic of Gilgamesh, to Dante, to contemporary Poetry and Southern writers.

I am passionate about teaching. I am interested in language learning, living healthfully, athletics, music-making (singing, song-writing, guitar playing), medical research, nutrition, dreams, and spirituality. I have taught math, Hebrew, French, Spanish, guitar, nutrition, SAT prep. I personally improved my score 210 points from 1360 to 1570 (out of 1600) on the SAT. .

My language learning background is in full immersion, meaning I've spent several weeks speaking only French, even to native English speakers. My interests include grammar, literature and pronunciation. .
