As a freshman in High School, I began tutoring a third grade girl. As an English Language Learner, her primary goal was to improve her reading comprehension and speed, her English vocabulary, and her critical thinking skills regarding literature. We worked together three times a week. Going into the job, I was excited to make some money. English was my favorite subject in high school and I have always loved reading, so I assumed I would also have fun with the job, and get to re-read some of my favorite grade-school literature books. All of these expectations were metI enjoyed the job and I enjoyed making money. What I did not expect, however, was the relationship I would build, the joy I would experience, and the love I would develop for teaching. I did not expect that over four years later I would return to Phoenix for the summer and immediately go to visit this student. I did not expect that her family would cook me Indian food for my birthday. I did not expect to be so deeply invested in the education and inspiration of this student. As a first time-tutor I learned that my student's goals become my goals. For the time that I am teaching, all that matters is working together toward those goals. Watching my students grow empowers me to better myself and strive for personal growth. Tutoring has also taught me that teaching is not just utilitarian. We need teachers, certainly, and teachers serve the purpose of educating. But teachers can also be mentors. Some of the people I most respect and admire, most strive to emulate, most love, have been teachers and tutors. As a tutor I am invested not just in imparting information and understanding, but in my students' well-being and happiness. I look at students as every human deserves to be looked at: holistically.Through high school and my first year of college I continued to tutor both for pay and as a volunteer, and these convictions have only been strengthened.Aside from tutoring, I spend time reading, exploring and traveling with my family and my boyfriend or by myself, studying Greek and Latin, and occasionally painting or drawing. I work out each morning and try to get some down-time to journal or listen to music each night. This summer (2017) I have been nannying three kids, ages 6 months, 8 years and 10 years, and a lot of my teaching and tutoring philosophies have crossed into my care of these children.Overall, my life mantra, so to speak, is balance. I have a lot of hobbies and I also tend toward work-a-hol-ism. Whether it's school work or a summer job, I can let it consume all of my time and energy, but every day I try to balance my time among all of my obligations and activities. As a tutor I hope to also mentor children, especially, but anyone, in introspection and self-knowledge. Sometimes meeting an academic goal requires more than flash cards and memorization, and I am here to be that resource and support.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English and Art History from Valparaiso University and Master of Arts in Art History from Bowling Green State University. I earned my teaching license in Secondary Education from Eastern Illinois University in May 2022. I am currently a high school English teacher. Before I started teaching, I was a test prep tutor, and clocked hundreds of hours working with high school students on SAT reading and writing and ACT English and reading. I truly enjoy working with students and watching them learn and grow both in my classroom and as a tutor.
Graduate MBA student based in Kansas City, MO looking to help motivate other students to grow and succeed. I believe that knowledge is power, and learning to overcome obstacles is one of the most valuable skills in life. Learning and knowledge go far beyond the classroom, and I believe that good collaboration, communication, and application are key to making students feel excited to learn.
Hello! I'm Jawalleh, a graduate student at Morgan State University pursuing my Master of Science in Civil Engineering. My journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Sustainability and a minor in Engineering. After graduating, I embarked on a three-month adventure traveling the world, visiting Australia, England, France, Germany, Amsterdam, Ghana, and Liberia. This experience broadened my perspective and deepened my passion for environmental conservation and sustainable living. My dedication to environmental education extends to volunteering, where I engage with communities to highlight the crucial role the environment plays in our overall health. I'm particularly enthusiastic about math, science, and all things STEAM, driven by my belief in the transformative power of education. As a first-generation student, I understand the challenges of learning new subjects. I've been fortunate to receive tutoring myself, and I'm committed to paying it forward by tutoring others.
In 2015 I graduated from Valparaiso University with Bachelor's degrees in History and Classical Studies, taking classes in both Latin and civilization, and minored in Theology. While in college I participated in a number of tutoring programs where I tutored not only my peers in college level classes but also worked with local elementary school students as they prepared for their ISTEP exams. After graduation I served for two years at a high school in Chicago as part of a post-graduate volunteer program. While there I was able to teach sections of Latin and World History. As a tutor I look forward not only to helping students achieve their academic goals, but also guiding them to a greater appreciation for their education, especially in the area of history and Latin. In my two years as a teacher I have found that often a student gains far more from the one-to-one experiences. I look forward to the opportunity to bring out the best in each student in this way.

There is nothing better than to learn something new everyday. I make sure I do this for myself and my hope is that you do likewise. Teaching is a two-way street. A good teacher should always remain a student. In fact, the best way to really know something is to teach it! I tell myself to always be ready and open to learning new things. This is my teaching philosophy.
I've been teaching- either in front of a classroom or one on one with individual students- since 2003. Teaching is something I truly enjoy and a part of my life from which I derive a great deal of fulfillment and inspiration. My enthusiasm for teaching is definitely grounded in my passion for learning. Reading, writing, and language learning are three of my favorite pastimes. Through my own learning experience and my time as a teacher I have developed a great respect for the unique learning process of each individual. I've had the opportunity to explore this process through teaching reading classes (which covered everything from basic phonics to university-level study skills and speed reading) to ESL instruction (including conversation, business English and TOEFL test preparation classes), and finally to Mandarin tutoring where I have the opportunity to share my written and spoken Mandarin skills as well as the cultural understanding and experience I gained from having lived in China for over three years. Through these diverse experiences I have taught students between the ages of 4 and 92 from all over the world.Along the way I have also benefited from knowing and having been taught by many great teachers. One of the most lasting lessons I have taken away from them is the importance of a good rapport between teacher and student to the learning process. Through establishing a good rapport with my students I strive to get to know them and gain an understanding of their learning strengths and challenges. One of my strengths as a language tutor definitely comes from the countless hours that I have invested in studying languages- predominantly Mandarin Chinese, but also German and Spanish. The process of successful language acquisition is something that is never far from my mind as I continue to hone my own language skills and plan lessons to best facilitate my students' continued success. While reading, writing, and language studying are three of my favorite pastimes, I also enjoy getting away from my desk to go on long jogs around Chicago, play basketball with my Monday night pick-up crew, and- weather permitting- get my cross-country skis waxed up and hit the trails.
I want to support others in writing in the ways that I wish I had when I wrote essays. I am working towards a BS in Computer Engineering, with minors in Math and Computer Science at Valparaiso University, while also being part of the honors college, which is based on argumentative writing. Having someone to ask for help from proves as an invaluable resource in any field, especially academically. I can be that aid. We all deserve the opportunity to receive help in whatever it is we are passionate about.
Let me help math make sense! I received my bachelors degree from Valparaiso University with a double major in mathematics and computer science. After that, I went back to school to get my teaching certificate. My past experience in the education industry has included substitute teaching, working as a special education teacher assistant, and tutoring at various tutoring/learning centers. I love mathematics and have a passion for helping others understand mathematical concepts. I have worked with students of various ages, from Kindergarten to adults looking to go back to school. Just recently I completed a data science bootcamp. I feel confident in my abilities to not only assist students with mathematics but also with Python programming and computer programming in general.
I believe that every student can learn any subject. The impact of a good teacher is crucial to student success. I use models, demos, mnemonic devices, examples, diagrams, video clips, and simulations to help students understand concepts. Learning should be fun and motivating. I use any method that works to help a student succeed.
I have tutored students in physics, calculus, algebra, geometry and math as a private tutor for the last 2 years. Before I began as a private tutor I tutored friends and was a tutor for the National Honors Society in High School.I love working with students and seeing them understand a subject they previously did not. Often students are missing a few pieces of information that keeps them from succeeding. My job has a tutor is to figure out what these pieces of information are and to correct it.
