I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice and graduated first in my class from Valparaiso University, where I also earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Together we created a fun and supportive environment, and I still keep in touch with these students. My favorite subjects address health disparities and at-risk populations. I started an LGBTQ+ education program for nursing students to increase cultural competence for this patient population. I am also a co-author for an award-winning textbook on nursing research. I know that nursing students have to contend with a steep learning curve, high standards, and the emotional burden that comes with caring for patients. I find joy in helping students mitigate this by cultivating their excitement and interest in the field. I believe that students who own their knowledge become better caregivers with better patient outcomes. I tutor in medicine as well as professional exams including NCLEX, ANCC, and AANP. My objective as an educator is to take overwhelming information and make it manageable, memorable, and personalized. I employ an adaptable teaching style utilizing a variety of strategies to help students comprehend and retain information. I foster growth in my students, helping them identify big-picture patterns to focus their studies. Health care is always evolving, and I hope that my students will go into this field inspired to keep learning. When I am not teaching or writing I enjoy nature walks and anything creative, including singing, learning various instruments, and working on whatever art project has currently caught my interest.
