Because the PSAT mirrors SAT content at a slightly lower difficulty ceiling, Zachary's 1550 SAT score and structured prep methods translate directly. He zeroes in on the algebra-heavy math questions and the command-of-evidence reading questions that carry the most weight for National Merit qualification. Students get a clear, repeatable process for each section rather than vague test-taking advice.

I am currently a student of the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). I am working toward a Bachelor of Sciences in Biological Sciences degree with a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology. Since my high school years, I have worked tirelessly through the community, tutoring my peers in my school's magnet program and children with learning disabilities for a nonprofit organization dealing with autism research. Though I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most interested in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. In all my years as a tutor, I have always tried to stress the importance of education in changing one's life to my students, being a firm believer in the power of knowledge and education's role in bringing out the best of people. In my leisure time, I enjoy running, tennis, pleasure reading to enrich my mind, and playing the ever soothing melodies of the piano.
Computational science at MIT means Tim lives in the overlap between math and logic — which is exactly where the PSAT's no-calculator section and data-analysis questions sit. But his philosophy double major is what sets him apart on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections, where evaluating the structure of an argument matters more than speed-reading. His 1560 SAT and 4.9 rating back up the range.
I'm a sophomore at USC studying Biomedical Engineering. In high school, I maintained a 4.0 GPA while participating in organizations like Mu Alpha Theta so that I could tutor struggling math students in subjects ranging from Algebra to Calculus III. Seeing how comfortable I was in the environment really made an impact on me, and I want to continue that experience tutoring through Varsity Tutors both online and in person. Students I have tutored before in math and standardized testing subjects tell me that my strategies and quick methods for arriving at solutions saves them a great deal of time and energy as they take their exams, which reaffirms my passion and love of tutoring. In my classroom experiences, I found that sometimes the methods that were taught were just too confusing, so then I either created or looked up better ways that secured a better grade for me in the class; the idea that the same problem can be solved in many ways is an idea I try to impart in all of my students so that they can feel comfortable using a process they picked out instead. In my free time, Iove to watch movies, play Super Smash Bros, listen to new music, and read articles on Flipboard.
I am currently studying for my Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I tutor my peers at the university level, but enjoy working with younger students as well. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I love tutoring Math and English! I find that students develop an appreciation for Math and English when they thoroughly understand these subjects, and it is my goal to develop this understanding in each of my students.
Dylan's computer science coursework at Northwestern — multivariable calculus, linear algebra, physics — means the PSAT's no-calculator math section plays to strengths he uses daily, particularly the Heart of Algebra and Passport to Advanced Math problems that demand algebraic fluency without a graphing calculator crutch. His 1500 SAT confirms he's navigated the full test the PSAT mirrors, and his CS training in systematic problem-solving carries over to the reading sections, where he teaches students to treat evidence-based questions like debugging: trace the logic, find where it breaks, pick the fix.
I am a recent graduate from Tufts University with a major in International Relations and a minor in Economics. I have been helping students since I was in middle school working with students of all ages from kindergarten to college. Prior to spending four years at Tufts, I attended a boarding school in Massachusetts where I was committed to tutoring middle school students at a local Boys and Girls' Club for all four years. I always enjoyed seeing the energy of younger students who were eager to learn and their visible improvements. I also worked as a teaching assistant for an SAT prep center where I tutored SAT verbal and writing along with SAT II literature and math. I moved to Las Vegas a few months ago after finishing up college, and I would love to get back to working with students on a regular basis because I understand the importance of education and enjoy helping and seeing results. My favorite subject to teach is SAT because with the right help it is a standardized test that can see huge improvements in scores. Writing section is especially my forte because I think that grammar is the basic building block of the English language that deserves a little more attention in school. I feel a great sense of fulfillment when students start to understand the different structures of English sentences and appreciate such knowledge. In my spare time, I like to stay active and go to yoga classes, including antigravity yoga, and drive to national parks for fresh air. I am also a big foodie who enjoys regular trips to different restaurants with friends and an avid movie fan. I look forward to meeting with students here in Las Vegas!
I'm 18 years old and I am a sophomore at Fordham University. I promise I won't disappoint!
I am currently an undergraduate at St. John's University in Queens, New York. I am currently pursuing a degree with a major in Economics and minors in Government and Politics and Legal Studies. I have a wide range of interests and have gone to Math/Science schools for most of my life which gives me a good base in all sorts of subjects from Math to Science to English. In my spare time I also like to read, draw, and I am currently teaching myself Computer Science and Chinese. While I am open to tutoring a number of different subjects, I will be sure to cater myself to what you most need and what will help you most succeed - please do not hesitate to contact me!
I am Cassie Bishop, and for seven years, I have been dedicated to helping students of different age groups (from middle school to college) in mostly math and science. As someone driven to become a professor, I love to teach and have a great passion for sharing my knowledge with others! I am most passionate about math and hard sciences, such as biology, chemistry, and physics and have most experience tutoring middle school, high school, and college students. My mission is to develop students' problem-solving skills so that they can get to the answers on their own to not only improve their homework scores but also help on quizzes and tests through better knowledge of the material. I hope to be able to help you with all of your tutoring needs and to promote student success!
I am currently an undergraduate at Ohio State University. I am studying economics with a math minor in the Honors College of Arts and Sciences.
I'm a 2016 graduate of Pepperdine University with my Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. Currently I'm preparing to apply to optometry school; I hope to be accepted for the 2018-19 academic year. During my time in college, I was involved as a teaching assistant for General Chemistry I and II laboratory, as a tutor for General Chemistry I, as a member of the Regents Scholar Student Board, and as a "small group" leader through multiple organizations. I am a member of the sorority Pi Beta Phi and held the positions of Historian, Senior Transition Leader, and member of the Leadership and Nominating Committee during my undergraduate years. As far as tutoring goes, I offer my services to students of all ages and in numerous subjects. I particularly enjoy tutoring the STEM subjects. I also thoroughly enjoy working with female STEM students, which allows me to serve as a role model and to offer additional encouragement for my female students to not lose interest in STEM subjects. A large part of my tutoring style focuses on logical thinking for how to tackle new and difficult problems using previous knoledge and educated hypotheses; I have found that my students find both success and a boost in confidence using my methodology. Aside from my academic interests, I love cooking and baking, my cat, photography, and National Parks.

Frequently Asked Questions
The PSAT is a standardized test that measures reading, writing, and math skills—essentially a practice version of the SAT. For students in Reno, it's valuable because it identifies strengths and weaknesses before the actual SAT, qualifies juniors for National Merit recognition, and provides a realistic score preview to help with college planning. Taking it seriously now means you'll have time to address any gaps before SAT test day.
Score improvement depends on your starting point and effort level, but students typically see 50-100+ point gains with focused, personalized instruction. The key is identifying your specific weak areas—whether that's reading comprehension, grammar, or math problem-solving—and targeting practice there. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who create a customized study plan based on your diagnostic results, maximizing the impact of your preparation time.
Pacing is one of the biggest challenges students face—the PSAT gives you limited time per question, and rushing leads to careless errors. Tutors help you develop a strategic approach: learning which questions to tackle first, when to skip and return to harder problems, and how to practice under timed conditions. With consistent timed practice tests, you'll build the rhythm needed to complete sections confidently without sacrificing accuracy.
Reading comprehension and word-in-context questions trip up many students, while math often challenges those unfamiliar with test-specific problem formats. Writing and language questions require quick grammar recognition. Personalized tutoring pinpoints where you're losing points—whether it's inference skills, algebraic reasoning, or sentence structure—and builds targeted strategies. Your tutor will also teach you to recognize question patterns so you can apply proven techniques consistently.
Practice tests are essential—they're your best tool for identifying weak areas, building test stamina, and getting comfortable with the format and pacing. Tutors typically recommend taking full-length practice tests every 1-2 weeks during your preparation period, then reviewing each one carefully to understand mistakes. This cycle of testing, analysis, and targeted practice is what drives real score improvement and builds the confidence you need for test day.
Test anxiety often stems from feeling unprepared or unfamiliar with the test format—both things tutoring directly addresses. When you've practiced extensively and know what to expect, confidence naturally follows. Tutors also teach calming strategies, help you develop a pre-test routine, and work through practice tests to normalize the testing experience. By test day, you'll have proven to yourself that you can handle the material and the pressure.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in test prep and understand exactly what the PSAT measures. When you connect with a tutor, you'll discuss your current score, goals, and specific challenges—whether you're strong in math but weak in reading, or vice versa. Your tutor will tailor their approach to your learning style and timeline, ensuring you get personalized instruction that addresses your unique needs rather than generic test prep.
Your first session is all about assessment and planning. Your tutor will review any practice test scores you have, discuss your goals, and likely administer a diagnostic to identify your strongest and weakest areas. From there, you'll build a customized study plan with a realistic timeline and clear milestones. This foundation ensures every session after that is focused and efficient, moving you toward your target score.
