I am a public school reading teacher in the elementary grades. I have a passion for educating young people and guiding them to academic success, either in or outside of the classroom. I have experience as a classroom teacher and a private tutor, in subjects that range from Reading and Writing to History and French. In my opinion, the path to obtaining a good education is formed by hard work, diligence, persistence, and an open mind. I work on a daily basis to instill these qualities in my students and tutees. I am currently an Undergraduate Freshman at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) studying Biomedical Engineering on a Pre-Medical track. I tutor mostly math-related subjects, such as Calculus and Linear Algebra. I push hard in my personal work to gain a strong, conceptual backing for almost all subjects, and am able to help others efficiently with this. Understanding material conceptually, rather than analytically, is vital to being able to think and apply knowledge. This is my learning and teaching philosophy. I am a graduate of the University of Maryland, with degrees in physics, astronomy, and studio art. During my time at university I was a member of the Physic Education Research group, conducting studies into the best methods of math and physics pedagogy. Although I am most accomplished in physical science education, my methods are applicable to all kinds of science. I have also studied history and literature extensively as a matter of personal passion. My goals as a tutor reach beyond simply grasping the material at the level which it is presented--I aim to give students the intellectual and emotional tools to grasp underlying principles of any field, and the confidence to believe that this is something they can achieve under their own power. I am currently working on getting my Master's in Mental Health Counseling at Adelphi University. I have worked as a school counselor for the past 9 years. I am a life-long learner and am interested in helping others deal with their academic difficulties and become excited about their own learning. I am passionate about English, Literature, History, and Latin and helping others improve in these areas.

I hold a Master's degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a Bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University. I tutored GED math for 3 years in college, so I have experience breaking down concepts for students with a variety of learning styles. I've also informally tutored other students in my math and science classes. My favorite part of working with students is seeing people's faces light up when they understand a tough concept. In my free time, I enjoy reading, walking, dancing, and listening to music.

I am a post-baccalaureate student at the University of Pennsylvania. Because I see myself primarily as a philologist, I am studying in order to enter a Ph.D program. I believe that language is one of the primary factors in shaping how we, as individuals, think and present our ideas to the world. I am also a proponent of teaching Classical languages such as Latin and Ancient Greek to students in high school because these languages require the development of analytic capabilities which are sometimes lacking in other more memory-oriented subjects. Furthermore, my education in the Classics does not only focus on linguistics but also on history, mythology, and culture. I studied abroad in Rome for five months in the Spring semester of 2011 through the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies. During my time in Rome, I learned Italian, got to see landmarks of antiquity such as the Roman Forum, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Syracuse, Baiae, and see Medieval Italy through the artworks of Michelangelo and Bernini. Consequentially, I have a strong grasp of historical occurrences in Europe from antiquity to contemporary society. I completed a Bachelor of Arts in History and Pre-Med at the University of Michigan, a Master of Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and am completing a Graduate degree in Social Work at the University of Edinburgh. I have also worked as a counselor, advisor, and co-curricular instructor for students at the University of Michigan. I have always said that mentorship is one of the most important aspects of a student's educational and personal development. I have benefited tremendously from mentorship, and I want to continue to give back as a part of Varsity Tutors. In the past, I have been a teaching assistant for my high school business class and a captain of my high school's cross-country team. In terms of relevant courses, I have taken and received 5s on AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Macroeconomics, and AP Microeconomics. I received a 1530/1600 on my SAT (790/800 math) and received an A in my college Calculus III class. I believe that, with the right help, any student can achieve the same results as I did.
