I also emphasize writing skills for students. Every class I have ever taught has completed a writing assignment. As a talented writer myself, I have the skills to work with students to improve their writing abilities. I work with them on style and content. I am very familiar with MLA and Chicago styles. I teach my students how to formulate a thesis, or an argument; how to use evidence to test that argument; how to perform analysis on that evidence; how to draw conclusions from that analysis; and how to present it all in an interesting and engaging manner. Students in my classes experience success in other classes and in their education. A significant number have gone on to pursue graduate study, including at Ivy League schools, while others have pursued successful career paths in various professions. I am a gifted teacher who is able to connect with students and assist them in their studies.

Learning happens when teachers see the student as a whole person. To be a learner is to be human. Teaching any content begins with this essential understanding. I am teaching reading and writing and thinking, but first I am teaching students to believe in themselves. They must believe that they deserve to learn simply because they exist. As a 2001 graduate of Washington College in Chestertown, MD, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in English with minors in creative writing and Spanish, I took on work as a journalist for newspapers for two years after graduating before embarking on a teaching career. I am certified by the Maryland State Department of Education to teach secondary English to middle and high school students, and my years as an English teacher have offered many opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of students. I have taught both middle and high school English for Baltimore County Public Schools, as well as middle school English for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and I am currently also a reading and writing instructor for Sylvan Learning. I enjoy motivating students to stretch their minds through discussion, writing, research, and collaborative activities, offering them the opportunity to dig deeper in considering varying perspectives and to make important new connections in their understanding of the world around them.
