I am an experienced teacher and tutor who graduated from American University with a BA in International Environmental Peacemaking and Print Journalism as well as a minor in Arabic Language. I first became interested in tutoring when I was a student through a literacy advocates program where I tutored in Washington DC. Post-graduation I spent time learning organic farming techniques on a farm in Hawaii where I led student tours and taught about sustainability. After that I moved to China where I taught English to a wide range of children and adult learners. I taught large groups of students in a classroom setting as well as one-on-one classes to individuals. After returning to the US, I continued tutoring some of the students I had worked with in China online. Before the pandemic, I ran an afterschool program in one of Buffalo's public schools for grades K-8. I created all the core curriculum, helped with homework and organized events for the students. I think a thirst for knowledge is one of the most valuable gifts you can give someone. I look forward to working with you or your child and helping him or her learn to love learning!

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Buffalo has 24 school districts serving nearly 45,000 students across 98 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a Buffalo Public Schools campus, a charter school, or a private institution, tutors can support their specific curriculum and academic goals.
Tutors work with students to master New York State learning standards across subjects like ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. They understand the state's assessment requirements and can help students prepare for Regents exams, which are critical benchmarks in New York's education system. Personalized instruction allows tutors to identify gaps and build skills aligned with what students need for success on state assessments.
While Buffalo's average student-teacher ratio is reasonable, individual classrooms still have diverse learning needs, and some students benefit from focused, one-on-one attention. Personalized tutoring fills gaps that classroom instruction alone may not address—whether a student needs to catch up, move ahead, or master a challenging concept. Research shows that 1-on-1 instruction significantly accelerates learning compared to group settings.
Buffalo students commonly seek tutoring in Math (especially algebra and geometry), ELA, Regents exam preparation, and science subjects. Many also work with tutors on test prep for the SAT and ACT, as well as foundational skills like reading and writing. The specific needs vary by grade level and individual student goals, which is why personalized instruction is so effective.
In the first session, a tutor will assess your student's current skills, understand their specific challenges, and learn about their academic goals. They'll discuss what your student is working on in their Buffalo school and identify areas where personalized instruction can make the biggest impact. This foundation helps the tutor create a focused plan for the weeks ahead.
Many students show noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though timelines vary based on the subject, the student's starting point, and their goals. Some students need help preparing for an upcoming Regents exam or test and see results in weeks, while others working on foundational skills may benefit from longer-term support. Regular sessions with a dedicated tutor create momentum that compounds over time.
Varsity Tutors works around your student's schedule—whether they're juggling school, extracurriculars, or family commitments. Tutoring sessions can be scheduled on weekdays, evenings, or weekends to fit what works best for your family. This flexibility means students can get the support they need without adding stress to an already busy schedule.
Yes. Beyond core subjects, tutors support advanced coursework like AP classes, honors courses, and specialized electives. Whether your student is preparing for AP exams, needs help with a challenging elective, or wants to strengthen skills for college prep, Varsity Tutors can connect them with a tutor who has expertise in that specific area.
