Phonics Tutoring review by Daria in Highland, IN
The student worked on writing/editing two papers-- one essay for Band, and one for English. I also gave her notes on her Bio chapters on Kingdom Protista in hopes that this will help her consolidate the information she needs to know when it comes time to study for a test.

We discussed a poetry assignment. The struggle for the student today was the task requiring her to write descriptively about herself. However, this was quickly overcome, and the assignment was very successful.

Phonics Tutoring review by Mark in Highland, IN
In the student's literature class at school, they have begun reading a new novel: "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. "The Things They Carried" is a semi-autobiographical, fictional story about the author's experiences during the Vietnam War. During this tutoring lesson, we reviewed / discussed the first two chapters of this book. The first chapter of this novel, The Things They Carried, introduces the characters of the book by revealing the things they carry with themselves (thus the name of the title). For example, Lt. Jimmy Cross carries around with him a picture of Martha, a girl who he is in love with. Another soldier, Ted Lavender, carries with him tranquilizer pills and marijuana. The character named Kiowa, an American Indian, carries with him a hunting hatchet and a copy of the New Testament. This first chapter goes on to explain what the other soldiers carry, thus revealing a lot about their character and personality. The second chapter is titled "Love." This chapter tells us that the protagonist of the book, "Tim O'Brien" (which is also the author's name) decides to write a book about his experiences as a soldier during the Vietnam War. Many years after the war, "Tim O'Brien" reunites with Lt. Cross and spends a full day looking at old photographs and talking about their time together -- and shared experiences -- during the Vietnam War. One of the main plot points of this chapter is Lt. Jimmy Cross' continued love for Martha. Lt. Cross and Martha meet at a high school reunion where he tells her of his continuing love for her. Martha has become a Lutheran missionary and has never married. The student and I ended our tutoring session by reviewing / discussing the three chapter 1 ("The Things They Carried") questions that his teacher had given the class to answer. He is a dedicated student. He is very attentive during our tutoring lessons. Thus, our session was very productive.

Phonics Tutoring review by Jasmin in Highland, IN
We reviewed verbs: to be, to have, to want, and to go. We practiced question making and answering in positive and negative manners. We had moments of conversational English to help the student with daily interactions and relationships. We did fill in worksheets throughout the lesson. Next lesson, he will have a "test" comprehension review on all verbs and some vocabulary. The student seems happy and improving.

Phonics Tutoring review by Kristin in Highland, IN
We reviewed vocabulary and introduced literary devices. We also talked about parts of speech, something she will incorporate into her vocabulary studies. When reading, the student shows some discomfort with discussing sentence structure and parts of speech. Her reading assignment is to read 30 pages into the next part of the book, "The Maze Runner," and point out literary devices being used.

Phonics Tutoring review by Stephanie in Highland, IN
We reviewed what is fiction and nonfiction, how to determine main idea, and describing characters. We then discussed culture and history texts. Then, I explained expository text by showing a few examples from books. We then covered informational/procedural text. The student read an expository book of pictorials. I completed a reading log to track her fluency and comprehension. She did well and was very focused on the book. I left her homework to identify the main idea and informational steps discussed in a Cupcake Fairy book.
