I graduated from Occidental College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Comparative Literature, emphasizing critical theory. My tutoring spans a diverse range of experiences: I tutored math at an inner-city school in Los Angeles, English to students in Hyderabad, India, and reading to rehabilitated refugee children in Arizona. After graduating, I instructed reading programs for the Institute of Reading Development, where I saw that, as my students' reading skills improved, their overall confidence skyrocketed. They became better students because they stopped feeling incapable and inept. This experience is the foundation of my tutoring philosophy. I believe education increases one's own sense of ability and self-worth. Because of this, I aim to inspire interest and excitement in my students, not simply teach them effect ways to memorize a textbook. In this way, I agree with William B. Yeats in that "education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." I empower my students to seek answers on their own and develop their critical thinking skills. As a tutor, I structure my teaching around the student's individual interests and needs. For example, one 6th grade student loved to perform onstage, so we wrote a play to explore theme, plot, and dialogue. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, English and American history. In my free time, I teach yoga and write creative non-fiction. I love cooking, eating, and travel.

I received a BA in Spanish from the University of North Texas with a minor in Music and I received a Master's in Spanish from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, where I worked as a Spanish teacher, translator and guest lecturer. During my time in graduate school, I also worked for the University Writing Center as an ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor to international students. When I graduated in 2013, I continued teaching ESL to adult learners at Austin Community College before moving to Dallas this year. While I am most qualified to teach Spanish and English, I have over ten years of experience teaching and tutoring students of all ages in a variety of subjects. While obtaining my BA, I had the opportunity to study in Spain, where I also held regular ESL tutoring sessions for a family and a businessman, and I was able to study ethnomusicology in Ghana, where I volunteered at a local elementary school tutoring students in English. After completing my undergraduate degree, I received my ESL certification from Seattle University and was soon offered a job in Hungary, where I taught ESL to middle school students. After returning to the US, I continued teaching in my hometown of Austin, Texas while also pursuing my other passion, music. I believe students learn best when they are motivated by something that interests them. One of my strategies for kindling interest among students is to encourage students to make connections with their peers and the wider world by employing student-centered learning techniques. In addition to teaching, I am a visual artist and a musician. In my free time, I spend a lot of time outdoors, riding my bike and hiking.

Let me start by thanking you for dropping by my page and taking the time to get to know a little about me. To begin with, I have excelled in academics from a young age. My competitive nature had me checking in at the scores table in everything I could handle. Whether it was UIL acting, science, maps/graphs/charts, spelling, science, or creative writing, I loved to learn and compete. While in middle-school, I was honored by Duke University for scoring in the top percentile of Duke's TIP program which allows middle school students to take either the SAT or ACT after receiving instruction and prep. These interests continued on into high-school where I eventually graduated as 21 out of 550+ students. However, academics were not my only strong point. I was awarded track athlete of the year as well as both "Mix 96 Player of the Year" and "Linebacker of the year" for football. I was the President of the first ever student formed Fellowship of Christian Athletes on my campus, a member of student council, the national honor society, and took part in several sports and youth groups. On the weekends, I enjoyed competing all over Texas with a traveling basketball team I was a part of. Fortunately, this early commitment to excellence helped me secure a spot with the Texas Tech Football team. In addition, I received a merit scholarship from Texas Tech based on my SAT scores and had my whole first year of college paid for by local scholarships I was awarded. After four years, I received my BA from Texas Tech and continued straight into my legal education. In may of 2014, I was awarded my JD from Texas Tech School of Law. I currently clerk for a law firm and tutor students. My teaching philosophy is that superior performance is something that can be achieved by each and every student with proper mentoring. I sculpt out every lesson based on the student's individual learning style and needs. One of the most important aspects of my tutoring consists of practice, practice, practice. Whether it is in athletics or academics, we will not achieve excellence unless we practice and prepare for excellence. I leave you with an open invitation to ask me any questions pertaining to my services and a quote I live by. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit." -Aristotle

I love learning and helping others achieve their educational goals. An avid reader, I read several books a week and am an Amazon top reviewer. Having attended a Baccalaureate High School with a language program as well as growing up in a Haitian-American household and doing foreign exchange in Brazil, I speak unaccented English, fluent Portuguese, and Kreyol. I also studied Latin, Russian and French, allowing me to read most Romance languages.I spend much of my time working with non-profits that benefit children, including a 6-year stint running the Information Technology Department and Media Center at a private school as well as the building of a Literacy Center/Library at a church. The current non-profits I work with include one offering health training and a wellness center in Haiti, a foundation that fosters leadership through preparing disadvantaged youth for college & a program that provides education/career counseling to families who have survived domestic violence. As a child, I had multiple disabilities that could have derailed my life. Instead, they fortified my desire to learn as much as possible, spawning over 50 hobbies and a general desire to improve the world around me. I hope to bring joy to your child's learning process as well as the knowledge that one can achieve anything you set your mind to.

"I am so adjective, I verb nouns."I believe relationships are more important than test scores, and people more important that numbers, budgets, or grades. But if we have to play along with this this game, we may as well play with skill.

Little did I know becoming an educator would be more than a career choice; it became a time for my own character education. The years I served as a classroom teacher were as much about me learning as they were about instructing others. Since then, my commitment to support the development and self-improvement of others has not wavered.Ten years as a public school teacher equates to approximately 2,000 students and was a pivotal time in cultivating skills as an instructional designer. It was also critical in honing my abilities as a facilitator who successfully engages participants and adapts instruction to meet diverse learning styles.I am NYS certified English teacher with ten years of instructional, design and assessment experience for both general and honors programs, and a Master of Science degree in Adolescence Education. I specialize in tutoring English, Literature, Writing, Vocabulary, SAT, ACT, NYS English Regents, and general topics related to language arts.

I am a lifelong learner with an academic background in language and literature, and, before that, in mathematics. I pride myself on having strong problem-solving skills, a can-do attitude, and the ability to share what I know with others.Beyond being just a good test-taker, a tutor must also be able to articulate robust reasons for favoring a specific approach to finding the answer or solution to a problem. A good instructor can make these reasons intelligible and abstract from them lessons that students can then apply independently. Since there are usually at least two ways of finding the right answer to a multiple-choice problem, it is important to be able to provide in-depth, theoretical solutions for those who want to go into the nitty-gritty, but also to solve problems using surface strategies for excluding wrong answers for students who, for instance, are more interested in 'surviving' the quantitative section rather than 'acing' it. Different students are likely to want different outcomes from their tests, and these goals and expectations should be determined in advance. As a tutor, I want to share my passion for problem-solving with others and foster an open, positive attitude about standardized tests. Attitude is very important a student who is open and confident about being able to solve the problem, even if not initially exactly sure how, might be closer to the right answer than one who actually knows how, but who has to first overcome a threshold of intimidation before being able to start thinking about the question itself. Part of the tutor's job is to make the tests less daunting and more approachable. I will give students not just the information they need to solve a problem, but also the confidence that they can dependably answer others like it in the future. Minimizing students' bafflement in encounters with math or complicated verbal reasoning questions, and replacing it with a spirit of 'you got this' is part of a successful tutoring experience.I see no better tool for intellectual exploration than guided conversation. Learning is best framed as dialogue, not as a one way-communication. A conversation can help students identify their strengths and weaknesses, and find out how to direct their efforts to improve. Self-knowledge equates with self-reliance, and a proficient test-taker is ultimately an independent thinker who can recognize the applicability of strategies that she has learned beforehand, and apply them without needing input or confirmation from a tutor.Like the teachers who have inspired me to internalize the critical mindset and quick response needed to become a proficient test-taker, I am confident that I have a good body of knowledge to impart, and welcome the opportunity to provide others with the kind of guidance which I myself have benefitted from.

I am a certified high school English teacher with three years of experience teaching and designing curricula for 9th, 10th, and 10th Honors English for the KIPP charter network. My love of English literature, language, and writing formed the basis of my college career; I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Houston Honors College with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a minor in dance. While in college, I worked as a Writing Consultant at the University of Houston Writing Center, where I tutored ESL students working on their academic writing, business majors crafting resumes and cover letters, and university students writing papers for their various classes. I love teaching all aspects of English education, but my favorite part is guiding students to find their voice as they talk about great books! I believe that clear, precise language is a powerful tool, and I want to help all of my students to wield it with authority. Let's get to work!
