Since graduating from Columbia University, I have spent the past three years working in a high performing public elementary charter school located in New York City. For two years, as a Teach for America corps member, I taught 4th grade in both a General Education and in an ICT Setting. During this time, I completed my Master of Arts in Education from Relay Graduate School of Education, graduating with distinction. As a teacher, I led my students to achieve over a 70% pass rate on the rigorous Common Core ELA Assessment, and over a 90% pass rate on the Common Core Math Assessment. This past school year I was an Assistant Principal in my school, overseeing our K-2 instruction for four months and our third and fourth grade instruction for six months. As an Assistant Principal, I prepared our teachers to implement our curriculum in both math and literacy, as well as developed and coached our teachers to better improve their instruction. As such, I have extensive knowledge of the Common Core Standards in both Math and Literacy for the elementary grades, with particular expertise in the third and fourth grade standards. In addition to my ability to tutor elementary aged students, as an undergraduate student at Columbia I tutored middle school aged students through the Double Discovery Center. I have a strong background in the humanities and in writing, and have had demonstrated success in preparing students for standardized tests. With my background in teaching and leadership in a school setting, coupled with my skills gained as a student at Relay, I have developed strategic instructional moves that have led my students to find success across subject matters. I approach my work with each student with the understanding that he or she might need different supports to make academic gains; as a teacher and an Assistant Principal, I differentiated instruction to both support my lower performing students, and simultaneously push my high performing students to exceed expectations. My passion for education and student success, in addition to my ability to form strong relationships with my students, will help me find success with you or your student. Outside of my work in education, I love taking advantage of all that the city has to offer from visiting museums and seeing plays, to exploring unknown neighborhoods and finding new restaurants, I am always seeking out new adventures in New York!

I am a currently attending Graduate School and working towards my Masters of Science in Education for Urban Adolescents with Special Needs (Grades 7-12). I enjoy tutoring because I find contributing to another person's joy and sense of accomplishment immensely gratifying.I am a person who enjoys different and challenging experiences, and I believe my track record as a tutor is an example of that. I have had the opportunity of engaging in the most unique mixture of peculiar, fun, and stimulating positions. My experience ranges from ESL classes with Somali refugee students in high school to Special Needs students in elementary school. I have also done some freelance tutoring intermittently for friends and family. All of these experiences have been contributed to my teaching style. My philosophy for tackling challenging academic subjects is also an outgrowth of my own personal study habits.I believe that organization is key. I have found that a certain combination of systematic organization and simplification of every detail helps to illuminate the solution. Having a structured and repeatable approach can then be engrained in the thought process through repetition, and improvement will surely follow.Furthermore, I believe positive reinforcement and encouragement are also invaluable tutoring tools. Inspiring confidence in students so that they don't become discouraged by difficulties they encounter keeps them engaged and more inclined to self-improvement.

I believe that the position of a person that helps to teach others is one of great responsibility because it impacts the lives of those children. Teaching helps to provide them with some future success. Participating in programs that help to facilitate understanding and learning deeply impacts the students lives as much as it does my own. When children are provided with this type of inspiration and motivation to succeed, I believe that it will help encourage them to create dreams and an innate drive to achieve them.During the summer of 2009, I spent three weeks participating in community service in San Juan, Argentina at the San Cayetano Community Center. While there I worked with native Argentine children each day, apportioning and distributing breakfast for them, preparing their lunch, and teaching them English. These 20 children ranged in ages from 3 to 16 years old, and none of them had any English in their vocabulary before we arrived. Thus, the challenge to communicate with them was great, but the rewards were even greater when I was able to do so. Although I only had three weeks to share with these children, I believe that the information I shared with them helped build a foundation for their future, and not only inspired them to learn more of the English language, but also motivated them to excel in learning new information in order to excel in their lives. I believe that this principle can be applied to promoting the understanding of any subject. My San Cayetano experience was truly unique and one that I am grateful to have been given. It inspired me to want to find commonalities with all children of the world and help them to excel by any means necessary. It especially has motivated me to find more children like those in Argentina whom I can help in a holistic way to promote their success and well-being, so that they, too, will learn to appreciate and embrace their learning capabilities in order to thrive and achieve their dreams.
