Certified Tutor

Hello! My name is Alex. I seek to help students with writing and coursework in English, Social Studies, History, Political Science, and the Humanities. I am a University of Idaho graduate and also have experience with Washington State University academic policies and programs. I am originally from Ohio and recently retired from active duty after serving 25 years in the US Navy. I traveled widely during my service and this broadened my experience of diverse cultures and the challenging problems facing the modern world. From 2012-2016, I worked as the Associate Professor of Naval Science for the University of Idaho and Washington State University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program. Through this position, I developed a deep passion for teaching and helping students of all ages, backgrounds, and individual ambitions.

I am exceptionally well-qualified to tutor English and writing due to my academic and past work experiences. Firstly, I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with endorsements in teaching English and Social Studies. I have completed extensive coursework in writing and literature. I am skilled and comfortable with teaching writing in all manner of formats and genres. In addition, I have worked as a writing tutor at the college and secondary school levels and am familiar with the challenges writers often face and how to best overcome them. Finally, I have worked with dozens of students whose first language is not English. I am fully capable of helping these students with their special reading and writing needs in order for them to achieve their learning goals.

I have been fascinated with the study of history, geography, and political science for my entire life. This personal passion led me to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Master of Arts degree in National Security Affairs. It also prompted my Secondary Education teaching certificate in Social Studies. In these subjects, I believe my academic foundation combines with my real-world military experiences to make me an outstanding tutor for students at any level.
