Ellen
Certified Tutor
I have over 6 years of experience with tutoring in English, History, and writing. I have also edited both academic, creative, and personal writing, and have experience in helping edit and structure college essays. I believe that my studies at the University of Richmond in English and Classics and my work in English at graduate school at NYU have given me a deep and nuanced understanding of both English literature and history that I would love to share with others.
I first became interested in education at college at the University of Richmond when I volunteered as a tutor for children between the ages of 6 and 10, working on reading comprehension, writing, and homework help. I continued to work as a tutor through Jumpstart, where I worked pre-K aged students on reading and writing skills, as well as early development in art and science. in my spare time, I have edited my friends' academic and creative essays for college classes and publication, respectively.
As a tutor, I believe that learning should be both fun and enlightening. I'm a compassionate, friendly teacher who enjoys working with students one-on-one, which I think is often the best way to engage with learning. In working with me, you will find someone who is supportive and patient, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure you learn and succeed.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that tutoring should be both fun and informational. I believe each student is an individual and that it is important to work with him or her to find the best learning style. I am a strong believer in the power of positive reinforcement and working together with my students to achieve their academic goals.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During my first session with a student, I would take time to review what we had talked about in terms of their educational goals and the material they are working on right now. I would have checked with them beforehand to make sure I had researched the topic or looked over materials as thoroughly as possible, so we could begin working on the subject matter together as quickly as possible.
