We went over problems involving integration by partial fractions tonight. The main focus was on setting up the equation to express the given rational function as a sum of its factors. The student seemed to really understand the calculus component of these problems, but we still need some work with setting up the initial problem.

The student has a test in math tomorrow on circles, ellipses, and hyperbola (no parabolas). For review, his teacher had assigned two worksheets: the problems included deriving the formula for the conic from a graph, deriving the formula from a description of the conic, drawing the conic from a given formula, and describing pertinent details (vertices, foci, etc.) from a formula. The student took a bit of time getting into the hang of parsing the general form of the formulas, but quickly fell into a steady rhythm for solving them. Surprisingly enough, circles were the most disorienting for him, but even that didn't take him long to conquer. By the end of the session, he was feeling very confident about the test.

The student and I spent most of this session on confidence intervals both for means and proportions. He seems to be getting a pretty good grasp of the material. He feels like he has an understanding of the material, and about the multiple choice questions that his teacher usually asks, which can be somewhat tricky.

We worked through some of her review packet for her final, focusing on logs, arithmetic and geometric sequences, and exponential functions. She did a great job using the formulas once we looked them up, but she'll need to make flash cards so she remembers them all. She looks confident and prepared.

Tonight we went over finding volumes and areas using Riemann sums and integrals. The student is having a hard time with setting up the problems. We discussed how to go from the problem's prompt to drawing the picture necessary to see the Riemann sum or integral. We discussed polar coordinates towards the end of the session and worked a problem on arc length.
I think she is making progress. This will be a tough class to get through, but if she can do this, she can do anything!

The student and I went over concepts in Physics in preparation for a future quiz. We went over 2D parabolic motion and solved a few problems. We then reviewed his Algebra homework and discussed strategies for improving his Algebra grade.
