Medieval Literature Tutoring FAQ
Whether you are majoring in history or literature, you will probably be required to have a working knowledge of various literary works that came out of the Middle Ages. Many works of medieval literature have had an important impact on European culture, and are still celebrated today. Whether you are someone who is studying medieval literature because you want to develop a greater understanding of the history, culture, and socio-political movements in the Middle Ages, or you need to pass an exam in your Western Civilization class, working with a private tutor can help you reach your academic goals.
Medieval literature can often appear similar to modern literature. Many literary devices have not changed drastically in hundreds of years, and a character's motivations are still extremely important to analyzing any piece of literature. Notwithstanding this, medieval literature can seem like it was written in a completely foreign language, oftentimes because it was, with dramatically different stylistic and compositional elements.
The concept of writing novels had not yet been invented in the Middle Ages, which means that medieval literature is almost entirely based on lengthy poems and plays. Even those have a very different feeling from modern poems and plays, with different rules and structures for how they were composed. The conventions of authorship were even radically changed between the Middle Ages and the present. On top of all this, the languages used in medieval literature have largely died out. The ones that bear even a small resemblance to modern languages, like Middle English or Middle French, have changed enough that they are not actually able to be read instantly by anyone fluent in their modern descendants. The library of works to be studied in a medieval literature class really is an entirely different beast than anything encountered in other literature classes.
Having trouble with a medieval literature course is completely understandable, and needing to get assistance is nothing to be ashamed of. By contacting Varsity Tutors, you can receive help finding a private literature tutor who has extensive knowledge of the Middle Ages. Your tutor can provide you with the guidance needed to overcome outdated translations and develop a greater understanding of various influential works.
In order to succeed in your medieval literature course, you will need someone who is knowledgeable in the subject. Many of these tutors hold prestigious degrees in English, literature, or linguistics from some of the top institutions in the country. Tutors are educators who love studying and analyzing medieval literature from all angles. They are also devoted educators who have a passion for working with students and helping them reach their academic goals. Your medieval literature tutoring can be conducted in a one-on-one setting that allows you to focus on your specific strengths and weaknesses. Each medieval literature tutoring session can revolve around a specifically crafted curriculum developed just for you. There is no universal plan or teaching system, allowing your instructor to cater to the specific works and stylistic focuses of your particular studies and letting him or her develop custom approaches to the material that complement your learning style.
Your tutor understands that you have a busy schedule, and that you have prior obligations with work or study. Because of this, they are happy to meet you anytime of the week that is best for you, including on the weekend. Furthermore, you can choose where you want to meet and are encouraged to pick a location that is comfortable for you. Additionally, if you don't enjoy face-to-face sessions, simply ask your tutor to meet you online.
If you are serious about improving your understanding of medieval literature, call Varsity Tutors today and ask us to help you find a tutor who is right for you!

Recent Medieval Literature Tutoring Session Notes
The student had already completed most of an outline template for her persuasive essay. We completed the template and then worked on revising it, with a focus on the ways in which the outline predicts a specific structure and its parts. She is making progress towards visualizing structural components in a way that abets organization in her writing. She continues to make dramatic advances in the selection, implementation and development of details and examples.
The student read an extra 10 pages between classes and wrote notes about what happened. We continued reading together and read another 15 pages during class. She wrote notes about what happened during those pages, and as we read, we have been jotting notes down about each character introduced in anticipation for the essay due next week.
The student and I went over a personal narrative that he received. We talked about using more details in his writing and showing rather than telling. We then moved on to researching for his upcoming history project about banking.
Tonight, we made note cards for the student's vocabulary test tomorrow. Then I quizzed her over the (20) words. I also quizzed her over her science vocabulary. By the end of the session, she knew all of her vocabulary terms.
Completed all workbook examples and practices from a packet starting from lesson 3-12, has become very proficient and accurate at classifying sentences, slight concentration on adverbs vs. prepositions
During this session, I obtained a copy of the student's study guide for her upcoming exam in order to determine how to plan the next few sessions. Because the exam will include the parts of speech, I continued to tutor the student in this area. I inquired as to whether or not the student had any questions from the last session and then proceeded to cover adjectives and adverbs, which included knowing their functions and how to identify them. I also gave the student various practice sentences wherein she had to demonstrate her understanding of the subject matter. At the end of the session, the student told me that she felt better about her learning and understanding.
