MCAT Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems Tutoring FAQ
The Biological Sciences section of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is an extremely important portion of the exam. Admissions committees place tremendous weight on this section, as it directly reflects an applicant's knowledge of the material most relevant to the study of medicine. Preparing for this portion of the test often requires a significant time commitment and a structured approach to ensure that every topic is covered in sufficient detail. MCAT Biological Sciences tutoring serves to not only help students craft an overall study strategy, but also to work through review materials, cover challenging topics, and review practice questions and exams.
Each MCAT Biological Sciences tutor has scored exceptionally well on this section of the MCAT, and many are outstanding students at the nation's leading medical schools. The scope of the MCAT Biological Sciences section covers the entire spectrum of the field of life sciences and organic study. MCAT tutors are knowledgeable in all aspects of introductory biology and organic chemistry, and can dictate the depth to which your lessons cover relevant material, helping you avoid the pitfall of studying the wrong concepts in too much detail. Your tutor has helped students with topics like molecular biology, metabolism, DNA and protein synthesis, microbiology, genetics, cellular biology, physiology, and evolution.
Aside from biology content, your tutor is also available to aid you in reviewing the many challenging organic chemistry subjects covered on this section of the MCAT, such as stereochemistry, covalent bonds, spectroscopy, molecular structure, reactions with all major organic compound classes, and the basic biochemistry of macromolecules. No matter what area you struggle with, your MCAT Biological Sciences tutor can help. Not only do these tutors bring extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge to their lessons, they have demonstrated apt communication skills when discussing complex topics. They can cover any topics, and account for your pace and learning style, enabling you to fill any gaps in understanding and more adequately prepare in advance of the exam.
In addition, tutors are flexible in scheduling meetings with you whenever and wherever works best for you. Work together at home or in a library; face-to-face online sessions can supplement your efforts if your scheduling is complex. Furthermore, meetings can take place as frequently as you need, allowing increased review if you feel nervous or unprepared as the test date grows near. This is a much more adaptable approach than a classroom-based preparatory program, which has to cover a set syllabus for a large number of people within a specific amount of time. If you start with your tutor well in advance, there will be plenty of time to go over the material you are least familiar with. Your tutor can also assess your abilities from the beginning, and will track your progress to fine-tune the lessons along the way. They'll quickly see how you are doing by assessing the results of practice exercises, assignments, and homework. Your MCAT Biological Sciences tutor is a skilled instructor with experience in both taking the test and in teaching it.
The Biological Sciences section, or more specifically, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, consists of 59 multiple-choice questions. You are given 95 minutes to answer all of these. Knowing all of your facts about organic and inorganic chemistry, basic biology, and biochemistry, therefore, is extremely important. Preparing for this section requires special attention because of the technical nature of the material, in contrast to the Chemical and Physical Foundations, Behavioral, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning sections of the MCAT. Contact one of Varsity Tutors' educational directors today to learn more about how connecting with a private MCAT Biological Sciences tutor can help you fully prepare for this important section of the exam.

Recent MCAT Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems Tutoring Session Notes
We began the session with questions the student had come across in her studying about enzyme kinetics. After she felt that she understood, we worked through practice biological passages for the rest of the session.
Today we went through some passages in the biology section of MCAT 11, we looked at the physical sciences section of that test last week. Of the problems we went through (about 29) she only got 9 wrong (compared to the 19 that she originally got wrong when she took this test last summer). I gave her very minimal guidance on this and we were thrilled with her results. Also, she is taking another practice test on her own. She has only finished the physical sciences section but scored 1 point better on it! It is the first time she has gotten that high in physical sciences. Very happy!
We reviewed the different types of isomers in organic chemistry, and then we were planning on going over some physics, but there was a mix-up and the student had already covered the physics material, we were meant to go over.
This session we reviewed the basics of organic chemistry: nomenclature, lab techniques, bonding, etc. We also began to review the important reactions for specific subsets of molecules. Today we looked at alkanes and alkenes. Tomorrow we will continue to review important reactions and spectra analysis of organic compounds.
We reviewed some of the practice biological sciences passages in her textbook and reviewed some content for cellular metabolism as well. The student is going to get a content review book to couple with practice problems for preparation.
We discussed enzyme kinetics and a few weak points in biology, including evolution. We also mentioned gene therapy and the nervous system. Later in the session, we went over a few aspects of mechanics, notably torque and collisions. The science continues to go well - the student has recorded a number of practice tests in which she received scores that are within the bounds she's trying to reach. The verbal section is the remaining sticking point.
