IB History HL Tutoring FAQ
International Baccalaureate History HL challenges its students to gain and retain detailed knowledge about large spans of history. It also requires them to compare, contrast, and synthesize these details into a comprehensive and global big picture. In such a class, students are presented with an amount of information that can be absolutely overwhelming to anyone who does not approach it in a structured fashion. Additionally, while the course and its internal assessments are difficult enough, the class is capped with a cumulative final exam that puts students' skills and knowledge to the test.
Apprehension and stress can strike a student at any point throughout such a course. If you find yourself struggling to keep up with the pace of your class, you may want to seek guidance from a knowledgeable professional. A tutor can help you prepare for upcoming tests and help you understand the content as a whole. While you may think that assistance specifically dedicated to IB classes may be relatively rare, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with superb IB History HL tutors nationwide who can provide you with personalized instruction aimed at bolstering your knowledge and preparing you to overcome the obstacles you're facing.
Specialized IB History HL tutoring is designed to address your particular concerns. Unlike class-based review or impersonal written resources, your tutor can adapt your lessons to your particular academic situation, allowing each of your IB History HL tutoring sessions to be custom-tailored and efficient. It is nearly impossible to self-analyze your own mastery of IB History HL topics, but your tutor can help pinpoint the exact areas on which you should focus the most time and energy. Furthermore, your instructor can begin your tutoring experience by analyzing your current IB History HL knowledge and identifying the areas in which additional review or study would be most beneficial to you. They can then use this analysis to construct a customized learning plan to help you achieve your academic goals.
All tutoring takes place in a location of your choice, so you can have your instructor's full attention. You can choose to study through in-person tutoring, or participate in face-to-face online tutoring sessions using our live learning platform. Either way, you can get questions answered as soon as they arise and receive feedback on your work immediately upon completing an exercise. Additionally, since you don't need to keep up with or slow down for a class of other students, you can adjust your learning plan as needed.
Want to spend more time discussing the ramifications of a particular political decision, or breeze through reviewing a sequence of rulers that you've already memorized? No problem! Personal tutoring allows you to steer the course of your review and focus on the material most important to your success. When the IB exam approaches, your IB History HL tutoring sessions can adjust to focus on preparing you to meet this challenge. Your tutor can help you study more efficiently and effectively in preparation for your IB History HL exams by helping you learn to outline and categorize your notes with precision, skim heavy passages for important details, and practice your recall skills for large swaths of history.
The IB History HL exam requires students to write a well-planned and heavily detailed essay in a relatively short period of time. Your tutor can help you practice responding to prompts and provide feedback on your work and time management to help you approach this portion of the test with confidence. It's easy to become overwhelmed by all of the information covered in IB History HL, but a personal tutor can help you approach the material in a way that allows you to become confident in your knowledge and skills throughout the course and when you sit for your final exam. Recent IB History HL Tutoring Session Notes
Tonight, the student and I continued to review for the test in Georgia history. We continued with the short multiple-choice quizzes over various historical topics. After each quiz, we discussed the items that were incorrect and why they were wrong. The topics covered: reconstruction and segregation, the amendments to the Constitution, Georgia at the start of the 20th century, and World War II. I also gave her additional review packets to study. These packets look at each of the standards to be tested on the test and gives explanation and examples. We will discuss these over the next two weeks in preparation for the exam.
Today, we spent most of the session completing lesson B213, Women's role in Gov't. Today's activity was to write an essay on a political article from CNN.com. She did a good job completing the assignment. We then had a few minutes left to begin English Lesson 26.
We reviewed Reconstruction and the Civil Rights movement. She did very well especially because the content was learned a while ago. No extra practice or grades to denote progress.
We reviewed chapter 10 test- he did very well.
We reviewed his independent reading log- new book about Greece.
We used a book I purchased to learn how to do DBQ's- and we answered question on 3 of the 5 documents.
Student has great memorization skills.
Student was left with a document to read and answer questions.
We covered Lessons 1 and 2 of the chapter on Monday, so we concluded the chapter by going through Lesson 3 on Tuesday. Lesson 3 covered the Depression and World War 2. We discussed what caused the Great Depression and so talked about the stock market, unemployment, and how these affected one's way of life. This discussion brought us into President FDR's New Deal and how this program really helped people get back on their feet. Then we got into World War 2. We discussed how the U.S. was bombed by Japan and how ultimately that event propelled the U.S. into WW2. We compared this to how the U.S. got involved in WW1. The student has a social studies test today, which is why we did back-to-back sessions. Next week she and I will be on a regular, once a week schedule.
Today was my first lesson with the student. After asking him some basic questions about his experiences with the standardized test, I gave him a 50 question practice test. For each question, I asked him his knowledge of the subject, helped explain things when necessary, then had him answer it. If his answer was incorrect, I helped explain the correct answer. If he gave the correct answer, I asked him to explain his answer. At the end of the session, I strongly suggested he review world history in particular (he struggled with that area the most) and have somebody do flash card exercises with him. Next week, I will have more practice questions for him.
