The English Regents is a standardized exam administered by New York State to high school juniors in an effort to determine if they meet the Common Core standards to graduate. The exams consists of three parts administered over one three-hour testing session. If you or your child need a little help preparing for the exam, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an experienced English Regents tutor who can assist you.
Here is how the structure of the exam breaks down:
- Part 1: Reading Comprehension - 24 multiple-choice questions testing a student's ability to identify key ideas and literary techniques in reading passages provided. Worth 24 weighted points.
- Part 2: Argument (Writing From Sources) - A writing assignment based around using facts from the provided texts to write a persuasive argument. Worth 24 weighted points
- Part 3: Exposition - Students are expected to identify the core idea in the text provided and then analyze how a particular literary technique or rhetorical device advanced the author's goals. Worth eight weighted points.
While general English Regents Prep courses concentrate on all three parts evenly, chances are that the student in your life needs more help in one area than another. If they struggle with multiple-choice questions, their English Regents tutor may share test-taking strategies to help them eliminate some of the incorrect responses if they need to guess. Many students also feel more confident if they have a "Plan B" in place should they encounter a tricky question.
