Elementary Math Tutoring FAQ
Having a strong foundation in mathematics is an important to ensuring that one is successful in his or her professional endeavors. While it might not seem like it now, the math courses your elementary student studies now will help her or him throughout life. How your child performs in elementary mathematics can inform how she or he feels about the subject in high school or college. Because of this, if your child is struggling to grasp the concepts covered in class, it is important that you take the necessary steps to ensure that she or he develops a greater understanding of mathematics. One way that this can be achieved is by hiring an experienced mathematics tutor to help your child overcome various educational hurdles.
Is math homework a hassle for your child? If so, a talented tutor can provide the guidance and perspective to help improve their understanding of math. Becoming proficient in math isn't easy for everyone, and if your child falls behind in the classroom, she or he may become self conscious and not want to participate in lessons. This can have a detrimental effect on her or his feelings about learning math, as well as reduce his or her motivation to study the subject. By working with a private tutor, your child can get the necessary guidance and assistance needed to understand how to perform calculations, understand various mathematic concepts, and decode word problems.
There are a number of tutors who are situated throughout the United States, meaning you have access to a dedicated tutor regardless of your location. By contacting Varsity Tutors, you will get help finding a skilled and experienced math tutor in your area. One of the biggest benefits of pursing private lessons is that it allows your child to get more focus and interactive lessons than she or he would receive in a traditional classroom setting. Tutors work hard to establish a working rapport with their clients, so that they can learn various ways to teach their lessons efficiently and effectively. As your tutor gets to know your child, she or he will be able to evaluate your child's strengths and weaknesses, learn your child's goals and objectives, and find out which learning style is best suited for your child. As your child's tutor learns this information, she or he will be able to develop a customized lesson plan that is tailored to suit your child's needs.
While classroom education plays an important role in helping children develop intellectually, it can often be inefficient and ineffective. Unlike the public school setting, where teachers have to complete a certain amount of course content in a semester, students who study with a tutor can learn at their own pace. This means that easily understood topics can be skimmed over, while difficult concepts can be reviewed and explained a number of times until your child understands them. Customized elementary math tutoring focuses on the areas of greatest importance, whether that is long division, fractions or decimals, measurements, or story problems, and skims over the areas that your child already knows.
By taking advantage of elementary math tutoring, your child may gain the confidence and skills necessary to succeed in math classes. A skilled tutor will adapt the sessions to meet your child's level and ensure the work is always challenging, but never overwhelming. Success in early math concepts can help build a foundation for later coursework, giving your child a strong background for advanced topics. By integrating games and activities, elementary math tutors can make math engaging, interesting, and fun! Recent Elementary Math Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I worked on her math home work. We also worked on test preparation for the end of the year exam, which encompasses all of the math for this year.
The student received a 100% on her retake of the test we went over last week.
The student asked me to focus on fractions, so we spent the majority of time calculating fractions. We cut out circles from construction paper and divided them into halves, quarters, thirds, etc. We then visually added and subtracted fractions. He had a bit of trouble understanding why we change the numerator when finding the common denominator, but he seemed to understand by the end of the session. We also worked on multiplying large numbers, which occasionally trips him up too.
The student had started his math homework, so we completed it and checked it.
He also had social studies homework which was reviewing a chapter and filling out a graphic organizer over the transcontinental railroad. We completed that as well.
The student and I reviewed some math topics for her assessment this week. We also continued to work on her math facts. I was astounded by her speed and accuracy!! I've seen definite improvement. She beat her previous time on all of the numbers she attempted today! Well done!!
Today we continued our unit 9 review. Toward the end of the session, the student wasn't starting to space out some, and we decided to make a game out of the last few questions. We timed the questions and then tried to beat them. It seemed to be just the thing the student needed to stay on track.
Worked with the student on reviewing multiplying and dividing by multiple digits. Also worked with the student on finding surface area and volume of different solids. He should be well prepared to finish his project on surface area for this week.
