Elementary Math Tutoring review by Suzanne in Portsmouth
The student and I reviewed her homework for the coming week. We worked on the numbers 18, 19, and 20. She can now consistently count from 1-20 without any mistakes. I am so proud of her! This week her letters are Q and Z. Her spelling is getting tremendously better. She is able to listen to the sounds as she says the words and can confidently pick the letter to match the sound she is hearing. While writing her Q and Z words this week, she spelled many of the words perfectly and was only a letter or two off with other words. She also read a new book tonight and was able to sound out all the words on her own!

With Student 1, we went over base ten blocks subtraction. His reading fluency is better, so we didn't spend too much time with reading. Student 2 had multiplication math facts we went over. He caught on quickly.

We went over the chapter Plant Parts in the student's science book and completed the corresponding Self Check. For math, we went through the "Using the Calculator" chapter. Since he seemed to have a harder time dividing in tens, hundreds, and thousands and finding the area of triangles, we also drilled those types of questions during this session.

We did more practice with times tables, and we covered division strategies, including drawing diagrams and counting up by the divisor to the dividend. The student is supposed to keep working on her worksheets and keep practicing her times tables.

We continued to work on memorizing multiplication tables. We played several multiplication games and went through the flashcards for all numbers 0-11. The student still has some trouble with 7 and 8, but she is definitely improving. Now, even if she is unsure about an answer, her guess is usually very close - within a number or two of the actual answer. So, I think that means that she's almost got them all memorized. I'm very proud of the progress she's made!

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Adenike in Portsmouth
I reviewed lessons in the student's notes, which will most likely be on her exam tomorrow. We covered the differences between mixed fractions and improper fractions. We also did arithmetic with the two different kinds of fractions. In addition, I stressed the need for her not to waste time (more than 2 minutes) on questions that she thinks are difficult. She mentioned that she did not do as well on her last exam because she was scared she was running out of time. Thus, after addressing these issues and doing lots of practice problems, I am hoping she will ace the exam tomorrow.
