Akhil

Certified Tutor

I am a current University of Michigan student, working towards a Bachelor's degree in both English and Political Science. I've spent much of my life tutoring, and have experience working with students from pre-K all the way up to, and including, college. I am especially proficient at helping with reading comprehension, literary analysis, close reading, and writing essays. I am also an ACT tutor, and focus on an approach that builds confidence towards the exam, not just repetition. I can also teach algebra and pre-algebra, as well as AP United States History. I am also available to work on college admittance essays and with public speaking.

I teach much the way I was taught: learning to recognize my own mistakes. I will never give a student the answer, but I will help them realize where they went wrong so they can focus on their mistakes. Especially in mathematical subjects, the true knowledge is in understanding the process of answering a question, and just knowing the answer is not enough. I work with students to recognize errors, and to help students be able to answer questions by themselves.

I have a similar approach in English subjects, where it is very important to develop a thought process when thinking analytically about a piece of writing. Students will learn to recognize grammatical structure and parts of speech, as well as to recognize important literary terms and techniques in writing, and how it contributes to the work as a whole.

Outside of the academic realm, I am diehard sports fan, and currently work as a sports journalist. My favorite sport is football, but I watch almost every major sport around the world. I'm also an avid fan of professional wrestling. I also enjoy reading, writing, and playing video games in my spare time, and I love working out and playing sports when the weather is nice. I also love watching stand-up comedy, specifically comedians like Kevin Hart and Jim Gaffigan.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in making sure that a student learns the material and doesn't just memorize it. That requires working at the student's pace, not the pace that I want. I also believe in trying to use real-world examples, or relatable examples to teach more complex concepts.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would get to know a student, and the concepts with which they have the most difficulty. It involves a lot of letting the student try to work through problems, and then stepping in when they struggle. This gives me a better idea of what to work on with the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

A lot of becoming an independent learner involves being a very "hands-off" tutor. I will not answer questions for the student, but rather teach them the thinking process behind getting the answers, and let them get the answers themselves.
