8th Grade Tutoring FAQ
Eighth grade education is often geared toward a singular goal: preparation for high school. During this year, it is crucial that every student masters the presented material in order to succeed in ninth grade. With teachers intent on helping classrooms full of students gain proficiency in these key areas, it can be easy for your child to fall through the cracks. If you are concerned that your child is not adequately prepared for the rigors of high school, or perhaps if your child is eager to attack those challenges earlier than expected, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a tutor who can give your child the opportunity to excel.
Varsity Tutors can help connect you with a tutor whose services can be custom-tailored to your child's specific needs. When you contact your local educational directors, they will construct an academic profile of your student, taking into account factors like his or her academic areas of interest, strengths and weaknesses, learning habits, and even extracurricular activities and personality. Using these criteria, we can help you connect with the best tutor to fit your child's unique portfolio.
Your child's tutor can then develop a customized learning plan to target the areas in which your child most needs to improve. The breadth of material covered in eighth grade can be staggering. Courses often encompass topics in pre-algebra or algebra, English and language arts, history and social studies, and biology or other sciences. The specific skill set emphasized in each class can lead to numerous projects and homework assignments, which can easily compound.
Eighth-grade tutoring can help your child sort through these different expectations and develop the necessary skills to not only succeed this year, but to excel in his or her academic coursework in high school and even college. Whether you are looking for assistance in strengthening areas of weakness, bolstering areas of proficiency, or simply imparting valuable study tactics and organizational skills, a tutor can help.
While improving areas where your child is currently struggling is obviously important, it may be just as important if not more so for your child to learn how to study effectively. Many students entering high school do not really know how to study. A lack of effective study skills can also impact students who did well in middle school because they may not have needed to study to excel in their courses. But for most students, a time will come where they can no longer get away with substandard study skills. A private tutor can help your child identify tips for studying that will help them most. The best way to study is unique to every student, so it is essential that your child learns the methods will work best for them personally.
Private tutors are talented in academia and in communication, allowing them to teach concepts in intuitive manners that your child can remember for years to come. They work to make your students lessons as efficient as possible, while also making them convenient and accessible. They can meet in a cafe after school, at a local library on the weekend, or in your own home in the evening. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform also allows you and your child to meet their private tutor face-to-face online. This provides a lot of flexibility because this means that their lessons can take place at the time, place, and frequency of your choosing. Tutors can offer extra assistance before exams or project due dates, or simply augment your child's education throughout the semester. Tutors also work to accommodate even the busiest of schedules, making eighth-grade tutoring as hassle-free as possible. Recent 8th Grade Tutoring Session Notes
Today, the student and I covered a grammar exercise about finding the object of a sentence when the sentence is in inverse or passive form. Then, I helped him complete his vocabulary homework. Next, we worked on math homework and reviewed the difference between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. At the end, he finished his history homework.
We covered topics for his science and math final tomorrow. Topics included DNA, plants, kingdoms, perimeter and area of figures. I saw his current grades and his upcoming final dates. The student was quick to answer questions. I did not leave him with extra practice since his final is tomorrow and he has a review in hand that he plans to look over again.
The student wanted help reviewing her chemistry for her upcoming science final. We covered most of the things that she had covered earlier in the year in chemistry which mostly covered the definitions of terms. We also went through her previous tests to look at the problems that she got incorrect. For the last half hour or so, we spent some time reviewing math concepts - how to complete the square and solve an equation, simplify rational expressions, etc.
Today we reviewed for the student's Science test that she has tomorrow. We covered properties of matter, chemical & physical changes, and chemical reactions. We discussed balancing equations, factors that affect reaction rates, fire safety, and electronic configuration of molecules, including the Lewis dot structure theory. In addition to reviewing for the exam, we reviewed types of angles for the student's math class and completed a worksheet.
She seems to do well on quizzes and in class assignments. I did help her create a study guide for her exam.
Today we worked on polishing the introduction to her declamation. She did a great job writing it, and made the appropriate connections without much prompting. I'm hoping doing this will show her how much easier it is to hear the corrections out loud than to read them.
Now that she'll be done with school next time we meet, we're going to work on finishing a grammar workbook we started, and go on to short reading and writing assignments. I'm going to gather a list of short stories for 8th-9th graders that we can read for the summer and do writing prompts on.
