We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Today, the student and I covered a grammar exercise about finding the object of a sentence when the sentence is in inverse or passive form. Then, I helped him complete his vocabulary homework. Next, we worked on math homework and reviewed the difference between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. At the end, he finished his history homework.

We covered topics for his science and math final tomorrow. Topics included DNA, plants, kingdoms, perimeter and area of figures. I saw his current grades and his upcoming final dates. The student was quick to answer questions. I did not leave him with extra practice since his final is tomorrow and he has a review in hand that he plans to look over again.

The student wanted help reviewing her chemistry for her upcoming science final. We covered most of the things that she had covered earlier in the year in chemistry which mostly covered the definitions of terms. We also went through her previous tests to look at the problems that she got incorrect. For the last half hour or so, we spent some time reviewing math concepts - how to complete the square and solve an equation, simplify rational expressions, etc.

Today we reviewed for the student's Science test that she has tomorrow. We covered properties of matter, chemical & physical changes, and chemical reactions. We discussed balancing equations, factors that affect reaction rates, fire safety, and electronic configuration of molecules, including the Lewis dot structure theory. In addition to reviewing for the exam, we reviewed types of angles for the student's math class and completed a worksheet. She seems to do well on quizzes and in class assignments. I did help her create a study guide for her exam.

Today we worked on polishing the introduction to her declamation. She did a great job writing it, and made the appropriate connections without much prompting. I'm hoping doing this will show her how much easier it is to hear the corrections out loud than to read them. Now that she'll be done with school next time we meet, we're going to work on finishing a grammar workbook we started, and go on to short reading and writing assignments. I'm going to gather a list of short stories for 8th-9th graders that we can read for the summer and do writing prompts on.
