Depending on your specific needs, our educational directors will help connect you with the appropriate tutor to clarify any academic areas of concern. Aside from helping you with your normal coursework, your tutor can also help you prepare for your future. Whether your primary concern is your state's high school exit exam, a college admissions test, or simply passing your last required course, your tutor can tailor your sessions to fit your individual needs. It can often be tempting to slack off during your senior year. A private tutor can act a guide and mentor to keep you on track and encourage you to continue doing your best.
For those applying to college, the process extends well beyond standardized tests, and tutors can also help you as you complete your college applications. We can help you select a tutor who is skilled in helping students organize and compose college application essays, short answer questions, or personal responses for scholarship opportunities. You can build a college application designed to stand out from the rest of the admissions pool. Let someone who knows the ropes of applying to colleges and scholarships guide you through this critically important process.
A private tutor can also make sure that you are prepared for college in terms of understanding what college courses are like and teaching you how to study effectively. A lot of students have a tough time transitioning to college courses and exams because they never really had to study in high school. This will likely change in college because many of the courses are a lot more difficult. Learning a study method or methods that works best for you can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration later on.
At Varsity Tutors, we know how busy high school seniors are, so your tutor will make twelfth-grade tutoring convenient for you. Tutors set their own schedules, meaning that they are flexible in the times and places they are able to meet with you. This provides you with the flexibility to meet in a time and place that works best for you. Recent 12th Grade Tutoring Session Notes
Today was my last meeting with the student before she took her final for math. She asked her teacher before our session if there was any further content we should be covering, but her teacher essentially told her that the study guide we had would be a very close approximation of what she would see on the final. We went over the study guide a final time. Together we created a set of notes to go with it that consolidated the material, and made it easier for her to find what she needed without digging to deeply into her notes. The student seems to have a good handle on the material.
I helped him complete portfolio 1 and half of portfolio 2 that is needed for successful completion of an online computer course. His score so far on the course was 95%. He is completing a PowerPoint presentation that we will go over before we submit.
During today's session the student and I worked on reading comprehension with his summer reading book, "The Chosen." I left him with the graphic organizers to continue using while he reads the next two chapters of the book which I assigned for homework. I have no concerns about this session, overall it went very well.
I covered introductory organic chemistry today. The student was very new to some materials in organic chemistry. She is still on the process of remembering the rules of IUPAC naming and functional groups. We were working on her homework assignment. After going over all the questions on the homework, she felt confident and seemed to be ready for her final.
Today we worked on the student's advanced comp assignment. This assignment will double as his personal statement for his college applications. I was very happy with the direction he took for the essay and look forward to continuing work on it.
The student and I reviewed the first sections covered in her Calculus class. We then went over her homework assignment, which covered finding the discontinuity and limits of functions for various values of x. The student caught on quickly and by the end of the session she was able to find the limit of a function by looking at its graph.
