I am a University of South Florida graduate with a degree in English and I love reading, writing and all things literature. I have a passion for words, their variety of meanings and even their histories and origins. Reading and writing are the key building blocks to success, whether it be academic, vocational or personal, those two skills continue to build throughout life; the better a person wields them the greater success that person experiences. As a former secondary English and Reading teacher and I am excited to help students grow and excel in the arts of reading and writing.

I studied at the University of Texas at Austin, where I received degrees in Plan II Honors, Neurolinguistics, English and Pre-Med, as well as minors in Chemistry and Biological Sciences. I have tutored professionally for seven years, teaching students from a kindergarten level, all the way up to a graduate student level. I have a strong base in all subjects, but I especially enjoy language tutoring, because I am multilingual. I love teaching Mathematics, Sciences, English, History, Writing...you name it. My philosophy is that the most effective teaching comes from knowing how my student learns, and meeting them where they are. I want to instill a love of learning, but that will not happen if I don't get to know my student.Outside teaching, I write fiction, perform Shakespearean theatre, cook and bake from scratch, design recipes, and add my mezzo soprano to my church chorale on a regular basis.Let's learn together!

My tutoring experience is varied and experienced, having taught all grades K-8, and all subjects for many years. I especially enjoy tutoring grades 3-6 in reading, mathematics and science, and working with exceptional students who are gifted or special education. Science is my favorite because I love experimenting, building projects like soda bottle water rockets, and working for and with wildlife by cleaning up their habitats and raising trout from eggs for release as fry (juvenile fish). Math is exciting to tutor, especially using manipulatives and other forms of representation-we can do that visually online as we work together. Reading for fun is one of my hobbies, but I know how to inspire struggling readers and teach them techniques for making sense of what they're reading.I would describe my tutoring style as rigorous, positive and focused on each individual student and what they need and want to learn to be a successful student in the subject we are working on. Short and long term goals are important to set, as well as learning study skills and work habits that will support their work in any subject area.

As a recently retired educator of the Clark County School District and teacher overseas, I still have a passion for teaching and helping the next generation of students achieve and strive to reach their own personal limits. I want to use my personal strengths along with good logical teaching methods and strategies to instill the joy of learning in every one of my students. I want my students to be good decision-makers who can take their learned knowledge and apply them into real-life situations.

I am a 2015 graduate of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a Bachelor of Science degree in English Education with a minor in Speech Communications. My endorsements are in middle school, English/Language Arts, Speech Communication, and Social Sciences. During classroom observation and student teaching, I helped students with research papers, college admission essays, creative writing, reading, ACT prep, and grammar. Additionally, I have had many years of experience helping my children with their studies. I am passionate about reading; I love helping students with literature and other reading assignments. One of my favorite parts of teaching is seeing the moment a student reaches that "a-ha" moment with anything we are working on. I love working one-on-one with a student because I like being able to help them find their strengths and that is more easily accomplished through tutoring. I believe learning should be fun. If a student can find an enjoyment in learning they are more likely to remember what they are learning and be able to think critically about any task. Anytime I can help a student master a skill in a fun way, I will incorporate it into my teaching. I love finding ways to bring personal interests into the learning process. When I am not teaching or in school, you can find me doing one of many activities, such as, reading, crafting, DIY home improvement projects, running, playing kickball, swimming, traveling to the beach, or hanging out with my children and husband.

I started tutoring because I've always had a knack for explaining things to people, and I've gotten good feedback from students I've tutored as well as friends that I've helped. I've been tutoring math and science for a couple of years off and on, and hope to continue helping people because these are subjects that I want to retain knowledge of for as long as possible. I can pretty much tutor any age or experience level, although my favorite is college level calculus II.I like to use visual and kinesthetic methods to explain concepts to students. I focus on ensuring that students really understand the theory behind why we solve problems a certain way versus just memorizing a formula or function. This method has helped a lot of my students become note confident in their problem-solving skills as well as become more able to learn new concepts easier because they have a better understanding of the fundamentals. In addition to general course subjects, I have experience training for math brain bowls, preparing for standardized testing, and studying for the fundamentals of engineering exam.

For the past 10 years, I have worked with a local non-profit as a certified tutor and part-time teacher. I have provided guidance and support for students as they strive to meet their goals. My experience as an AmeriCorps VISTA has given me the opportunity to create and coordinate programs for youth and community members on a citywide level in Orlando and New Orleans. These programs are still operational today, and achieving their goals of boosting educational attainment and reducing crime.I have helped adults who speak English, but dont know the alphabet. I have helped others get their GED and study for college Algebra finals. I have helped students learn to understand, speak, read, and write in English better, so they can improve their performance in school, on the job, gain citizenship, and make new friends. I work with youth to develop study strategies that will help them be successful in school and in life. I have tutored students to meet, and exceed, grade level expectations in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, ESOL/ESL, and Adult Basic Education. I enjoy working with adults because they tend to be very clear about what they wish to learn and why. I enjoy working with youth because I love seeing the spark of excitement when they begin to understand the magnitude of their potential. My teaching philosophy is that students are most successful when they clearly define their own goals. My young students may want to finish their homework early to have more time for the fun things they enjoy, or improve their grades to stay out of trouble. My adult students may simply need a drivers license to find a better job or free up more time to spend with their families. Some need to pass a professional exam to use their advanced degrees in the US. I have helped them all achieve success. My tutoring style is collaborative. I work WITH my students to help THEM achieve THEIR goals. This is fundamental and very important to me. I choose curriculum and teaching materials based on my students goals, ability, and learning style. The real work belongs to the student, but I do my best to make it as fun and interesting as possible. On a less serious note, I am just a simple nerd who loves learning new things. I love taking my nieces to the Orlando Science Center, watching superhero movies and cartoons, and going to comic book stores. My favorite superhero is Wonder Woman because she stands for truth, justice, and equality even though she sometimes has her doubts about humanity.
