I first began tutoring when I was in 5th grade. I was outside of my home playing with the locals, when a parent came up to me and said, "You look smart enough, come help my son in math." I was a little shy and nervous at the time, plus the fact that her son was 3 years older than me, I wasn't sure what to expect. The first day of tutoring I looked at his homework and said to him this looks pretty easy. After a few more sessions he told me he wanted to show me something, he pulled out a quiz he took and pointed at his %100. He told me it was the first %100 ever; I took out a $20 bill and told him this is my first $20 ever (his mother paid me for tutoring him that day). Since then I have been tutoring in various capacities, from high school students to siblings. My goal is to ensure that everyone I interact with are one step closer to being successful.

I am a graduate of University of La Sabana in Colombia, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2020 and ever since I was a student in High School I've had a passion for tutoring classmates. During my college years I traveled through Western and Central Europe and Hong Kong learning about political economy, conflict management and debate skills. I'm a native Spanish and English speaker, and since 2018 I started tutoring K-12 and college students in the areas of English & Spanish (grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing), social studies, history, geography, philosophy, economy, government, standardized tests and writing in both English and Spanish. Understanding how investing and finance works will aid the student in applying a disciplined approach to investing, finance, and business affairs. Communicating one's understanding of concepts in a clear and concise manner is also necessary for today's business world, and helping learners do so effectively is part of this process.

I received both my graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. I have an M.B.A and Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology. I am also a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA AAMA) and CPR/AED/First Aid instructor. For over fifteen years I have instructed students in subjects to include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical and administrative procedures and pharmacology. I was a part of a task force that created test questions for the Certified Medical Assisting examination so I am familiar with the formatting used on standardized tests. During my tenure in a "big city" proprietary school I put my M.B.A. to use teaching courses in economics, sociology, and business communications. The students I have instructed ranged from those that were home schooled, GED recipients, attendees of traditional brick and mortar schools, and non-traditional adult students. Before this I worked at a top 10 hospital in the pathology department. I assisted with the processing of anatomical and surgical specimens. When I say anatomical specimens, I mean autopsies. Because of this, I have an extensive and firsthand knowledge of anatomy.I was recently asked to put my teaching philosophy into words and this is what I wrote:"No should ever leave my classroom feeling that they didn't learn anything, their time was wasted, or they didn't get their money's worth. In order to accomplish this, I will be organized, prepared and demonstrate competence in the subjects I teach, every day. To help students develop I will adapt lesson plans to their different learning styles and use lecture, audiovisual, and hands-on demonstrations to meet each student' needs."When I am not teaching I like to watch NCIS, Forensic Files, and Doctor Who (although I miss David Tennant and Matt Smith). I am waiting for The Walking Dead to return so my sons and I can take turns trying to scare each other when we walk the dog after watching an episode. Fires in the backyard and family game night round out my extracurricular activities.

I have always enjoyed teaching reading and writing skills, and have experience ranging from the professional - interning with an author and helping to edit and research his book on high-frequency stock trading - to collegiate, being the editor of a school literary magazine, a tutor to my friends and peers, and presenting papers at university events. I love helping students improve their grammar and rhetoric, creative and analytical writing, and social science understanding. I believe that one of the most significant ways someone can improve in a subject is by increasing their confidence. Too often, people misinterpret small difficulties in reading or writing as proof that they will never excel. I have also been an SAT tutor at my local test prep center in my senior year of high school. I'm currently a sophomore at Cornell University working towards a bachelor of arts in biological sciences. As a tutor, my ultimate goal is to make sure my students feel confident enough about a subject to answer questions without any help and feel prepared for their exams.
