I started tutoring when I was in high school, myself, where I volunteered as a "Big Brother", helping incoming freshmen adapt themselves to the more rigorous environment of St. Paul's. While an undergraduate at Columbia University, I taught SAT prep courses. I will be going to law school in the fall, and until then I am continuing my passion for teaching with Varsity Tutors! My tutoring style has always been to fit the lesson to the student. Whether you're studying for chemistry test or analyzing a work of literature, prepping for the SAT or the LSAT, I make sure to focus on your goals and how to reach them. I also aim to help my students really improve the knowledge of their subject along with their writing, reading, and analytic skills--not just get past the next exam.

I started my teaching career as a Science Teacher right after graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology. I moved on to teaching ESL to adults and earned my Master's Degree in English. I have four-plus years of teaching and training both adults and children, and am currently pursuing my Masters in Teaching. I enjoy tutoring students one-on-one as it lets me give undivided attention to my students and witness significant student growth. With my technology background and experience teaching multiple subjects to a wide range of students, my teaching style is versatile and flexible. I love bringing real world applications into my lessons, and also drawing connections across different subjects. I believe that memory retention is higher when students can relate to what they learn and apply it in their own lives. From my experience, I have learned that there are different kinds of learners, and to be effective you have to modify your teaching style according to the needs of your students. I see 'teaching' as 'knowledge sharing' and make an effort to get to know my students. With every teaching or tutoring assignment, I learn as much as I teach. This aspect of teaching is the most rewarding.

I am a graduate of The University of Tulsa, where I received BA degrees in Anthropology and Sociology. While studying at Tulsa, I tutored students in several subjects including, Sociology, Anthropology, and Statistics, among others. In addition, I occasionally served as a guest lecturer at the University's introductory-level Sociology courses. I offer tutoring in SAT/ACT test prep, English, Anthropology, Sociology, and Social Studies. I enjoy most working with students on writing and revising essays in any subject. When I'm tutoring, I think it is most important to talk through issues with my students and try to ascertain how they're thinking about the problems they're trying to solve. If you're thinking about the fundamentals of a problem in the correct way, any other details will fall into place fairly easily. In addition to tutoring, I am a touring stand-up comedian. In my spare time, I enjoy competitive swimming, reading, and I also play a pretty mean MarioKart 64.

I graduated in 2014 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Human Nutrition. My interests included ceramic art, watching movies, hiking, and doing community service. Last year, I did a year of service with AmeriCorps here in Cincinnati. I worked with high school students and enjoyed the continuous challenges they provided. I have a plethora of tutoring experience in college where I did peer tutoring and mentored middle school students in an after-school program. I have a total of 4 years of experience working with students form first grade to 12th grade. My favorite subjects to teach are middle school math, critical reading, and nutrition. I graduated from Summit Country Day School in 2010 where I ran cross-country and track.I thoroughly enjoy helping students as they tackle difficult problems. I believe my previous experience tutoring, my patient manner, and my ability to direct students' attention makes me a great tutor.

I graduated from Dickinson College with a B.A. in International Business & Management and a minor in German language. While at Dickinson College, I studied abroad for a year in Germany at the University of Bremen and tutored two high school students in German back in the United States. After college I continued my studies and received an M.A. in International Affairs from the George Washington University. As a graduate student I volunteered for the Washington, D.C. YouthBuild Public Charter School’s Tutoring & Mentoring program with an inner city high school student. I worked with this student for two years and covered topics ranging from arithmetic and pre-algebra to U.S. history and government. I truly enjoy watching my students improve academically, and I have the most experience tutoring in German, U.S. government, U.S. & European history, and AP Human Geography. Having been both student and tutor for a considerable amount of time, I understand how important education is for young people. During college I swam competitively and like to swim during my free time here in the Washington, D.C. area.

I enjoy tutoring because I love the chance to adapt to individual students' goals and learning styles. I have a B.A with concentrations in history and political science and an MA in political science from Brandeis. I have also been a teaching assistant at Binghamton University in philosophy, where I gave one-on-one tips in both writing style and content area.My favorite subjects to tutor are history, English, literature, writing, philosophy, and SAT prep. I've always had a passion for narrative and communication, where these subjects in the humanities meet and form a core source of critical thinking skills that fuel inquiry and success in both higher education and life.In addition to teaching at Binghamton and taking on a number of private clients, I designed and taught college-level courses to high school students as part of MIT's Educational Studies Program. This program places undergraduate and post-college instructors with small classes of highly motivated students to tackle advanced subject matter. This gave me excellent experience in pedagogy and adaptive teaching.

I was once told by an administrator that I have the ability to reach students that others struggled to reach and motivate, oftentimes at-risk students, and I found this one of the highest compliments of my career. I find it my greatest goal to make sure that all students, from those seeking the highest standards to those struggling with basic skills, can understand themselves, can define their abilities, and can work forward to becoming all that they are meant to be.My years of teaching experience have helped prepare me with two important abilities: seeing language arts as a means to develop students' awareness and ability to communicate more effectively, and a greater appreciation for the individual student through balanced and effective classroom teaching and management. I teach because I have a passion for teaching, but mostly, because I care about reaching and inspiring each student from a wide array of backgrounds and abilities.

As a young child, I was excited about school and loved any opportunity to learn about events and people. I grew up in Parsippany, New Jersey and went through their public school system from Kindergarten through 12th grade. The teachers I had made me feel like I had something to offer the world. I immersed myself in books and new experiences and wrote about the things I discovered and imagined. My passion for investigating and writing lead me to Ramapo College of NJ where I studied Communications, Journalism, and Political Science. After completing many internships in news and public relations, attending a Capitol Semester in Washington D.C., and writing for the Ramapo News, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts.Quickly after graduation, I realized that this career wasn't going to fulfill me in the way I thought it would. I thought back to my babysitting, nanny, and tutoring jobs and realized that nothing else in my life had ever made me feel as gratified as creating an environment for children to grow, feel nurtured, and learn. Children taught me so much about myself in my young adulthood and the idea of being an educator where I could make a career out of teaching and learning seemed like the obvious choice. I quickly applied for teacher assistant and aide jobs in schools nearby and applied to Montclair State University. There, I am pursuing my Master's and teaching certifications in Elementary Education and Students with Disabilities.Working in Special Education as a classroom aide for 1.5 years in Wharton, and then substitute teaching in Parsippany for the following year, affirmed for me that I had found my niche. My coursework at MSU combined with my work experience and my student teaching experience has allowed me to develop a teaching style that welcomes and values all students and families, understands how to address the diverse learning needs present in modern day classrooms, and build cooperative communities that reach all students.

I believe in doing work which will benefit society, and our youth most of all. I do this as a writer, and I think tutoring students so that they may flourish in school is also admirable. It is my hope to make a difference in young lives, and help them find the confidence to succeed. A test is a metaphor for life. How one approaches it is the main determination of one's fate. I also want students to know that they are capable of success if they work hard, using prior shortcomings as lessons toward improvement. Few people are born with the natural capacity to ace a standardized test without practice. However, we are all capable of reaching our goals if we pursue them fervently and with a positive frame of mind. I had mentors, and now I want to be one.I aim to foster a love for reading. Books shaped my life when I was young. I devoured all of The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries, which admittedly aren't the best literature, but they provided a familiarity and kinship. I cared about those characters. When I was older I read The Catcher in the Rye, and I learned that I wasn't alone at being alone. Still later, when I read Macbeth, I realized the depth of emotion words could possess. My life was forever changed. It is never too late to fall in love with literature. I believe a reluctant reader is someone who hasn't been offered the book that sparks him. Yet.As a writer, I have learned to love the research process. When I started, it was overwhelming! I can help students of all ages navigate, organize and cull their research. I am an American Revolution historian with three books published on the subject and another on the way, so please consult me for help on that subject! (George Washington is my hero.)Finally, I want to share my passion for writing. So many students find it challenging and even aggravating. I know I can help them improve their writing skills. More than that, I can teach them to enjoy putting words to paper (or screen.) Technology changes, but the art and craft of writing does not. And it is a beautiful thing, indeed.
