I am a graduate of Amherst College where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish Literature. Since graduating I've worked as a paralegal in a corporate law firm and a freelance translator. Before that I worked as a teacher during my summers in college instructing adolescents from both upscale and low-income neighborhoods. While I tutor a wide variety of subjects I'm most passionate about Spanish, History, and Literature. In my experience, helping students learn Spanish and prepare for standardized tests is the most rewarding part of teaching and tutoring. I'm a native Spanish speaker and love teaching the language and culture that I grew up with to others. Similarly, there is no feeling more satisfying than seeing a student I'm working with experience an "aha moment" as what they're learning starts to click and their confidence consequently grows. In my opinion, education isn't one size fits all, as such I individually tailor my lessons for each student I work with. When I'm not tutoring you can find me reading a book, playing soccer, or bemoaning my decision to be a life-long fan of the New York Jets.

I've been tutoring since I was in high school. I started by tutoring French and teaching flute to younger students. I realized how much fun it is to teach and continued tutoring when I was in college. I tutored my fellow students in Mandarin Chinese, French, and Chemistry. After I graduated, I went to China and taught English both at a school and privately for three years. Right now I am teaching English as a Second Language at a language school here in San Diego. I like private tutoring a lot more than teaching large classes because it's much more personalized, and I can help the student learn exactly what they need. It's great to see someone make progress and become confident with something that he or she was previously struggling with. I am interested in tutoring anything related to English, especially grammar and vocabulary, SAT, ISEE, French, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, History and Social Studies, Algebra, Music Theory, and Flute. I am excited to meet my new students!

I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina and am passionate about environmental issues, public education, and urban planning & design. After taking nearly all the AP & IB social studies courses my high school had to offer, I headed to Chapel Hill where I majored in environmental studies and minored in city & regional planning. Since graduating from UNC I spent a year working in Bangkok, Thailand, followed by six months working in Cape Town, South Africa, and four months working in Auckland, New Zealand. After all this globe-trotting I spent a year as an AmeriCorps member with Habitat for Humanity in Durham, NC. I recently moved up to Washington, DC and am eager to work as a tutor at Varsity Tutors.I love working with AP/IB history & English students, SAT test prep students, and GRE verbal reasoning students. Additionally, I enjoy working through job/school/scholarship applications with people of all ages. Having successfully applied to multiple scholarships and fellowships and mentored younger friends over the years I am eager to share the lessons of my experience with other people looking to reach their full potential.I know what it's like to be struggling on a specific test or in a particular subject area because that was me in most math classes since middle school. Luckily, I was able to get solid math tutors throughout those years who taught me not only math skills, but also showed me how a good tutor can empower a student to solve problems on their own. I hope to not just support my students to succeed on tests and in class but empower them to thrive holistically.

I am a graduate of two institutions. The first is Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University where I received a Bachelors of Science in Broadcast Journalism. The second institution I attended was Full Sail University where I received a Masters of Science in Entertainment Business. Also, I obtained a graduate certificate in mediation and conflict resolution from the University of Phoenix. Currently, I attend Trinity Washington University where I am getting a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Educating for Change. I began tutoring in 2008 as a volunteer at a community center in Tallahassee, Fla. Then, I was hired by a company in Leon County, Fla., where I was a tutor from 2009-2011. I also have experience as an educator. I taught Spanish at a summer camp in 2010 to students ages 5-14. Plus, I have teaching experience in Alexandria, VA and Washington, D.C. The subjects I tutor in are writing, social sciences, Spanish, and organizational skills. My favorite subject to tutor in is writing. I am an avid writer, and my writing skills are a strength in my life. I believe every student can learn and that every student learns differently. My tutoring style is interactive and rooted in differentiation. I will work to actively engage my students in their learning, so it is beneficial for them. Outside of tutoring, I am a foodie. I enjoy trying new cuisines and cooking. Also, I enjoy sightseeing in Washington, D.C. Education is important to me. I will work my hardest to ensure your child's success academically.

I am currently a graduating senior at the University of Washington expected to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Law, Society and Justice. Despite my age, I have engaged in a unique series of tutoring experiences. These range from traditional academic settings where I provided support for students struggling in History and English through my involvement in National High School Honors Society, to my roles in educating and assisting homeless and other diverse populations through public health initiatives and political organizations. I love engaging with subjects that educate us on how we as individuals structure our world and view ourselves. This love has developed into a passion for writing, literature, and numerous genres of history as I find that these subjects truly articulate who we are.I find that greatest way to teach any material is by demonstrating that the subject is not just isolated to an exam, but to also to a countless amount of diverse fields that influence a student's life . For example, cultivating a love for American literature by looking at it through the lens of sports writing. This idea provides a foundation for how I view education; as never simply confined to the classroom. We engage in the learning process through truly ever part of life. This I believe, is the most important element for academic success. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, listening to music, and amateur boxing depending on how I feel.

I have been teaching professionally for about three years. Nothing brings me greater pleasure than watching a student progress and achieving goals, no matter how big or small. I use my personal experience as a learner of language and think from the student's perspective when designing lessons. No two students are the same, and I'm constantly modifying materials that I have to meet the student's learning needs. My love for language sprouted when I started learning a language that wasn't dead. Up to freshman year in college, I had only studied Latin and hadn't experienced applying language beyond translation and reading. I majored in Mandarin, minored in Turkish and have been exploring other languages ever since. Learning language became the segue for teaching it when I went to Taiwan for work and academics. Upon returning to the USA, I got a job with a company that specializes in intensive English. That opportunity equipped me with a dense amount of experience in teaching all aspects of language to a spectrum of students in terms of proficiency and academic ability.Beyond work, I am a yogi, dancer, athlete, reader, and culinary explorer. I appreciate all forms of dance, especially tango, salsa, hip hop, and belly dancing. I train Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo regularly and enjoy basketball and soccer when I have the chance. I believe learning is a journey without an end and strive to expand my horizons through reading about health, anatomy, classical literature and a slew of other subjects.

I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, with a minor in English, at Rochester College in Michigan. I am pursuing a post-Bachelor certificate in Dietetics at Virginia State University. Having both school experiences has given me exposure to a wide variety of subjects. I also have diverse tutoring experience. I tutored peers in Writing, Math and Statistics as an undergrad, pre-kindergarteners to adults in reading comprehension, phonics, math and test prep at a learning center in Michigan, and, most recently, reading, writing and standardized test preparation to a variety of students here in Virginia. I don't have a favorite subject or age group to work with; the more variety, the better. I enjoy working under a blanket fort with a Kindergartener as much as I do having an intelligent conversation about a research paper with a highschooler. No matter the age, my philosophy is two-fold: 1) learning should be enjoyable and 2) the goal of tutoring is independence. I want my students to look forward to when I come, but also to be able to confidently wave goodbye at the end of our time together because I have prepared them to handle their work on their own. When I'm not in class or tutoring, I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, gardening and boating. I also can be found very often in my kitchen, trying my hand at whatever new concoction has piqued my interest that day. I'm always willing to try new things and meet new people and I greatly look forward to meeting you!

I am currently completing my fourth year of the B.A. / M.A. Combined Program in English and the Teacher Preparation Program at Stony Brook University. With a strong background in literature, composition, and teaching methods, I believe that I am prepared for the dynamic and exciting challenges of tutoring students for their English classes. Through my coursework, I have designed lesson plans based on the Common Core State Standards. During my field experience in diverse Long Island school districts, I observed engaging lessons and had the privilege of observing the administration and grading of the English Regents Exam. As President and Co-Founder of the Stony Brook Book Club, I led weekly discussions and created a comfortable and intellectually stimulating environment. As a teaching assistant in the Massapequa Public Schools Summer Music Program, I taught students new skills and concepts while encouraging their continued growth. I believe that every student can find a book he enjoys and with the right practice, can express himself through writing. I love to read, bake, and scrapbook in my spare time.
