I enjoy the fact of teaching something to someone and seeing the light bulb in the head go off through that twinkle in their eye; that is when I feel a sense of satisfaction because I helped someone get past a hurdle.

My name is Adrian and I'm a 24-year old teacher/tutor. I am a very personable, outgoing person and I enjoy making connections with others- especially when I can make people feel comfortable no matter what the setting- and I find that those who have less to say usually have the most important things to say! Tutoring provides me with a platform in which I am able to help others gain confidence in their work and watch them discover abilities they may not have known that they have. Above all, this is what I most love about tutoring and teaching.I was working towards my chemical engineering degree at McGill University when I realized I wanted to pursue something more complementary towards my outgoing personality and of all my experiences, I have most enjoyed working with and educating others - especially in math- so I feel as though this is a great opportunity to move back into that field. I am now taking a small break from school to see if I can pursue my love of teaching and especially one on one tutoring. When I was growing up, I faced a lot of learning challenges, particularly with ADD, and as a result, for a long time I was extremely fed up with the education system. As I've worked through my hurdles, I've picked up a lot of tips and tricks and I now know how to deal with unique challenges in a standardized system. It would be my pleasure to help others experiencing similar difficult situations.I have been a paraprofessional in Math classes on a high-school level (where I was in charge of lesson plans and teaching from grades 9-12), a private tutor for 10 years (elementary, middle, high school, and university levels, including special needs students), a teaching assistant at Arizona State University, where I taught groups of first and second year university students in algebra, functions, and statistics and probability, taught music at a beginner level (cello, saxophone, piano, violin, viola), played as a professional cellist for about 5 years, and worked as an EMT for football, basketball, and track at a high school.I am available for tutoring very flexibly- please contact me whenever and I will get back to you ASAP! I also have an interactive tablet that allows you to see everything I'm writing on my screen, like a blackboard (especially important for math lessons!). I have taught all walks of people- from a shy second grader to a 30-year old man suffering from lasting effects of a head trauma incident while in the US Army and I am confident I will be able to help you no matter your situation. Give me a shout and we will set something up I'll show you why I believe that ANYBODY can understand math. All that's needed is a creative method of teaching, as each and every student learns differently, so I am constantly thinking of new ways to explain concepts until I find at least one that works. I look forward to hearing from you!

Biology Tutor • +18 Subjects
Hello,Having gone through some tough schools and classes (and even ones where I didn't have the attention and interest that may have helped), I know that that reality is that you will not understand every subject quickly.Did Einstein understand relativity in an hour, or did he have to work years to get it?I was an assistant to a Nobel Prize winner when younger. You know I did not get everything right away. But he was a great teacher and empathetic person and it worked! So I know that anyone can learn almost anything even if they think the subject is hard, or the others are "too smart".Our school system is not always perfect about motivating learners on all subjects. Nor does it deal with pressures and expectations from other classmates, people and what society expects of you. SO WHAT! I truly love to see the smile when someone says, "I get it".As a public school JHS and HS teacher, my license is in Biology 7-12 and have taught other sciences. I also have advance degrees in other areas and have taught it on a college level.I have a BA in Economics from Queens College (but had more courses in science), an MA in Economics from Northwestern University, and MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Chicago, and an MA in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education.I do not have a "favorite" subject to tutor. A lot of learning is seeing the value in the subject, and the beauty of utterly understanding it.My teaching philosophy(s) are many but boil down to a few things: 1 What does the student need to understand? 2 What does the student understand at this time? 3 How does the student learn (visually, via reading, examples, etc.) and 4 Teaching to reach the student's goal for what they need to learn. And 5 make sure the student understands before proceeding. (Another way of saying - to not waste time and finding the source of the misunderstanding.I look forward to doing learning with you that you feel good about and results in you "getting" what you want to know.Thank you for reading this.

I hold teaching licenses in both New Mexico and California. I have 20 years of teaching experience in both the classroom and tutoring environments. My teaching and tutoring assignments have been varied, ranging from working in a combination 4-6 classroom, high school classrooms involving multiple subjects, and adults studying ESL. I have also been guiding students in preparing for the GED exam since it's new format in January 2014. By working with such a varied age population in various subjects, I have learned to work with students with different and unique learning styles and processing skills. This allows me to target the specific areas of need with each of my students in order to find the most effective way to present material so they will be successful in meeting their challenges. After only six months in my previous teaching job, I was awarded "Employee of the Month" as a result of my hard work and dedication to my students. I am skilled in making a personal connection with all of my students and together we always find a way to work as a team to meet each one's individual goals. I really look forward to helping guide your student on a path to future successes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors' Other category covers a broad range of academic subjects beyond traditional core areas, including test preparation (GRE, GMAT, LSAT), professional certifications, specialized academic subjects, and skills-based courses. Whether you're preparing for a standardized test, need help with a niche subject, or want to develop specific academic skills, we can connect you with tutors who specialize in these areas. Each tutor brings expertise tailored to your unique learning goals.
In a classroom, teachers typically pace instruction for the average student, which means some students move too quickly while others fall behind. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt their teaching to your specific learning style, speed, and needs. Tutors can spend extra time on challenging concepts, skip material you've already mastered, and use examples relevant to your interests—creating a customized learning experience that leads to faster progress and deeper understanding.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors across all skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced learners. Whether you're starting fresh with a new subject, preparing for a major exam, refining specialized knowledge, or aiming for mastery, tutors can meet you where you are. During the matching process, you'll share your current skill level and goals so you get connected with someone experienced in helping students at your specific stage.
Research shows that personalized 1-on-1 instruction significantly boosts learning outcomes compared to classroom-only instruction. Tutors help by breaking down complex material into digestible steps, identifying and addressing specific knowledge gaps, providing targeted practice, and offering immediate feedback. This focused, responsive approach accelerates progress and builds confidence—especially valuable for challenging or specialized subjects where students need expert guidance tailored to their unique questions and learning pace.
Getting started is straightforward. Simply share your subject, current skill level, and learning goals with Varsity Tutors. We'll match you with a tutor who has the right expertise and teaching style for your needs. Once matched, you'll work with your tutor to set up a schedule and begin personalized instruction. Many students see measurable progress within the first few sessions as tutors tailor their approach specifically to how you learn best.
Yes. Varsity Tutors understands that students have packed schedules. You'll work directly with your tutor to find session times that work for both of you, whether that's early mornings, evenings, or weekends. Most students find that even consistent 1-2 hour sessions per week produces noticeable improvement. Your tutor can also adjust frequency based on your progress and upcoming deadlines or exams.
Good tutors track progress through multiple measures: improved scores on practice tests or assignments, deeper understanding of concepts you previously struggled with, increased confidence when tackling difficult material, and better performance in actual coursework or exams. Your tutor should regularly check in on what's working and adjust the approach if needed. Most students notice concrete progress—whether that's higher test scores, clearer comprehension, or greater independence with the material—within the first month of consistent tutoring.
