I love Science and hold Bachelor of Science Degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry. I could be that nerd that they base TV characters on, though I have excellent communication skills. Teaching has always come easily to me, and my students claim to learn well from my flexible teaching styles. I can effectively relate the material to students' lives so they can understand it in their own terms. If the student doesn't reach the answer on his own, then it won't be meaningful or committed to memory. I find a way to lead with questions so the students can feel the small triumphs of answering questions on the road to learning how to solve problems on their own.

An appreciation of education is a prerequisite for any great tutor, and I believe that I have this appreciation. As a student at Duke University, I recognize that it is my teachers and tutors who played vital roles in my academic achievement. I would love to have the opportunity to help other students the same way my teachers and tutors did for me.One of my strengths that contributes to my success as a tutor is my ability to work with all kinds of people. Growing up in Portland, Oregon and going to college in Durham, North Carolina, I have not only been exposed to a diversity of people, but I have also had the chance to work as part of a team in many different settings. From helping my peers with problem sets in my biochemistry class to conducting spelling and geography bees as a volunteer with the North South Foundation, I have had many opportunities to work with others in an academic setting.Perhaps it is these previous experiences that most significantly contribute to my ability to be an effective tutor. I currently volunteer as a tutor with America Reads & Counts in Durham (ARAC), and through this program, I work with students in the Durham community to help them get the most out of their education. I usually help my students with their homework, and my experience as a tutor with ARAC has taught me valuable lessons about communication and empathy that I believe have shaped my ability to be a successful tutor.

I am currently enrolled in the University of Washington. My major is currently undeclared, though my primary interests are Computer Science, Comprehensive Mathematics, and/or ACMS: Discrete Math and Algorithms, with a possible minor in physics. I am a firm proponent of education, and believe it to be necessary for a proper quality of life. In my free time, I enjoy exercising, reading, and persuing any manner of personal projects.

I'm currently an undergraduate student at MIT, studying Computer Science. I'm relatively new to tutoring but I like seeing people learn and helping them along that process. I lean towards Math and Computer Science (especially the more conceptual, proof-based aspects of these fields) because I like the challenge of solving problems. As such I try to emphasize understanding of underlying concepts to optimize both long-term information retention and usefulness.Outside of Academia I'm interested in Taekwondo, Calisthenics, Music Production, Gaming, entrepreneurship, and trying out new things. I want to be able to do a backflip and run a mile in under five minutes. Learning languages has been a hobby of mine for a while as well, but I haven't had the time as of recent. I'm thinking of learning some German in the near future though.

After finishing my first semester at the University of Arizona, my adviser sat me down and told me to start cheering because I was done taking math courses forever. I wanted to cry! I realized that day that I wanted math to be a part of my life forever, and that was the day I decided to become a high school math teacher. I've tutored in math since my freshman year of high school for ages ranging from 7 to 21. I love math and science for myself, but even more, I love the feeling of sharing my passion with others. I love the moment when students begin understanding a subject! The second their brain goes from confusion and hopelessness to understanding and excitement is the most valuable experience I have had as a tutor! I tutored through my private high school, Phoenix Christian, and currently privately tutor in Math 100-129 and Chemistry 151/2 at the University of Arizona. I love teaching using my degree is Mathematics with an emphasis in education as I want to become a high school teacher and eventually a college professor!

I really enjoy working with people to overcome personal barriers to understanding math! Once I was shown that numbers were not a tool of oppression but rather a means of expression, I became free to enjoy math as a challenging game. I look forward to helping others share in that same freedom.
