I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I hold a Ph.D in English from Fordham University in NYC and a valid secondary school teaching license. Plus, I have over 30 years of experience teaching and tutoring students: 26 at the university level and four at the high school level. My expertise spans a wide range of subjects, English Language (grammar, syntax, and all the 'fun" stuff) and composition (the act of written expression), reading for comprehension, literary analysis, Honors and AP English, Mythology, Debate and public speaking, creative writing (I'm even a published author), college application essays, university level research essays, and test preparation coaching for High School, University, and Grad level testing. I am passionate about creating a learning environment where I empower students to find their own unique voices and express their ideas with confidence. I specialize in breaking down assignments into easy-to-follow steps, and I utilize a variety of diverse teaching methods to tailor a tutoring session to what an individual student needs. I'm especially good with neurodivergent or non-traditional students--not only am I one myself, but both my kids are and I've adjusted my practices many times to better fit what a student needs in order to be successful in an academic setting that isn't one-size-fits-all. My goal is to inspire students to realize their own potential and to transform writing from a confusing or intimidating task into an enjoyable and rewarding experience. In all my years as a teacher, the one thing I missed most was the chance to talk one-on-one with a student and really listen to what they needed--tutoring lets me do just that! I'm excited to learn more about you and help you achieve success.

Hobbies

I retired from classroom teaching just this year so I'm still in the exciting phase of actually having time to do the things I LOVE to do. In other words, I'm having FUN! I am a published creative and academic author, and -yes, that qualifies as fun to me-so I'm writing a new romance series and working on several research articles to send off to journals. My research interests are varied, but often a little strange: I like to write about the way that societies handle outsiders, strangers, and monsters. I am a huge fan of scary movies and books. I also love roller coasters and dirt bikes and taking walks with my Husky named Moose. On the quieter side, I like reading, painting, baking, crochet and sewing cosplay outfits for my kids--and I have three lazy cats who like to hang around when I do the quiet stuff. I love spending time with my family: my husband who is both an elementary school teacher AND a musician (bass guitar), and my twins (a boy and a girl) who are now in college and working and becoming amazing grown-up people. I absolutely LOVE crime drama tv shows, podcasts, documentaries, and Netflix specials. I'm kind of weird but I'm a lot of fun.
