Certified Tutor
Hi! My name is Kayla and I am very excited to begin tutoring! Ever since I was in grade school I had an immense love for learning and school, but I found at times it was difficult for me to always understand or to grasp what was being taught. For that reason, I now want to be a tutor and help other students who need help whether it is help for one test or through out the entire subject, I want to aid you in your educational journey!
I have an B.A. in American Studies with a concentration in African American studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.Ed in Secondary History education. I am currently a modern world history teacher to an 11th grade class
Outside of school I have worked in a number of museum jobs ranging from the National Archives to the B &O Railroad Museum. Now, I do not say all of this to show off my credentials, but rather to one, provide an explanation of the subjects I am best fit to tutor in, also to give an understanding of how I teach and tutor.
My approach to tutoring is whatever works best for you. Luckily, in a subject like history there is no one way to learn it. I have found some students best work with film, images and music to learn the subject. Some students only need a book or notes and they can learn that way. Some need to go to actual historic sights, and some students need a combination of learning approaches. As your tutor I will use my past experiences, knowledge, and flexibility to best help you learn and comprehend the information being given.
As stated before, my degree is in American Studies with a concentration in African American studies, and I currently teach a Modern World History class, but, I am able to provide study skills for other areas of history, particularly AP World History. If there is another subject area I am not equipped to tutor in I am more than willing to provide resources that will help you in that area.
I think history is an amazing subject and because it impacts everyone, I believe that there is a history subject that all students can find and really make their niche. I understand everyone will not leave being a history buff, but as a tutor, and a teacher, I want to make sure students at least feel comfortable not only during test, but to discuss the topic outside the classroom. I hope through my assistand I am able to help with that and to make strong and confident students!

My hobbies include reading, listening to music and collecting music. I am a huge lover of vinyl records! I also enjoy watching movies, especially older classic films. I have recently moved, so my current hobby is exploring my new city. I try to go to a new place, it could be something as small as a cafe or a museum, every weekend! It's fitting that my main interests is history and that encompasses much of my hobbies so collecting records, vintage shopping, seeing old films or documentaries and going to museums. Being in grad school and working can make my schedule busy, but I do try to make room to enjoy the things that make me happy!
