I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Education has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I attended the University of South Carolina, where I graduated in May 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Throughout my time in South Carolina, I was exposed to a variety of school systems. After graduating, I spent a year teaching in a low-income school district in North Carolina. While teaching fifth grade, I learned a lot about how important reading support in schools truly is. I currently teach fifth grade in New Jersey, and I was recently accepted to Harvard University for a graduate program beginning in the upcoming fall. This intensive program focuses on language and literacy in the classroom. Upon graduating, I will have a Reading Specialist certification.

While I love being a general education classroom teacher, I believe small group and one-on-one instruction is incredibly helpful for students. This is why I have such a passion for tutoring. I have experience tutoring a variety of grade levels, from as young as second grade to as old as seventh grade. While I have tutored in all subject areas, my favorite subjects to tutor are reading and math. Reading is the foundation to all education, and I believe there are so many approaches that can be adopted when reading one-on-one that can help students achieve their goals. I believe math is a subject that can easily discourage students, but also can be highlighted by "a-ha" moments. There are a variety of approaches in math to each content focus that may not be covered in the general education classroom. I am very passionate about helping students approach math in the way that works best for them.

My teaching and tutoring philosophy is simple: all students can learn and all students should have the opportunity to learn. Despite a family's income or background, all students should have an equal opportunity to learn and access to materials and support that will help them achieve their goals. I believe I apply this philosophy while teaching and tutoring, because I push my students to want to learn. I adapt the curriculum and information to appeal to the students to see that they can enjoy whatever is being covered. Through this, students realize that no matter what obstacles they may have to overcome, they can and will learn when we work together.
