Hundreds of years ago, education was a luxury provided only to the wealthy males of the society. Throughout the years, education has progressed, becoming more and more commonplace; less of a luxury and more of right bestowed upon men and women. I am passionate about helping students because I believe that education should never be a luxury. I believe that education is a right and that everyone who seeks knowledge should be given that right. It is my personal goal to aid in that search for knowledge and to help as many students as I can reach the common goal of wisdom. I have had many opportunities to expand upon that goal. Throughout my time on this Earth, I have had the pleasure of being a daycare teacher, a latchkey provider and nanny. I went through the Early Childhood Education program at BOCES and have since continued into the education field by working on a Early Childhood Education degree at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia NY. I tutor a mixture of different subjects with a proficiency in English Language Arts. I learned English as a second language many years ago and now I speak in more fluently than my native language! I like teaching English because I believe that if I could do it, then anyone can. I want to be there to help my students succeed at one of the hardest languages in the entire world to learn. Since I learned it myself, I believe that I can provide another way of looking at it than most tutors. Remember. English is rough. It can be understood through tough thorough thought though.
My teaching style differs depending on the student I am teaching, the age group they are in and the subject I am teaching. I believe that each person is different and so their learning styles are all different as well. I try to adapt to each of my students. As a baseline, I use a style called the 3 D's. Dictate, Discuss and then Delegate. The directing style promotes learning through listening and following directions. The discussing style promotes learning through interaction. The delegating style promotes learning through empowerment. I typically structure each of my sessions to include some amount of each teaching style. Using an appropriate mix of teaching styles helps students learn, grow, and become more independent. "A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary." ~ Thomas N. Carruthers
Outside of Academia I enjoy reading, writing and crafts. I am currently reading the Beautiful Creatures series by Kami Garcia. Every year I participate in the NaNoWriMo challenge which is a yearly event that challenges participants to write a 50,000 word novel in the span of the 30 days in November. I also crochet, knit and sew in my spare time. I believe it is fun to be able to make something out of nothing.
