Owen: Chicago Heights tutor
Certified Tutor
I am an incoming freshman at the University of Chicago, intent on majoring in math. I have been tutoring students at a nearby high school in math for about 5 years, even in the same level of class that I was taking. I can confidently tutor in math from Algebra 1 through Calculus 2, and know the IB Higher Level curriculum inside and out. Math is my favorite subject to tutor simply because, despite how logical it is, there is a lot of room for creativity in how one explains or learns a concept. Math can be applied to so many areas that the possibilities are endless.
My teaching style really hinges on the student being independent. I try to provide smaller hints to help the student along, and seldom give an answer away; the process of working for that answer is what really provides the valuable insights necessary to succeed. I also focus on developing strong fundamentals, after having tutored so many students who were failing not due to a "lack of skill", but rather due to not fully understanding something from a previous class. Getting to know the student is very important to me.
Outside of math, I have played electric and upright bass for around 9 years, and founded and manage my own jazz quartet which performs around Sacramento. I have also played tennis for a similar amount of time, though I had to cut out some of the competitive aspects to accommodate for schoolwork.
