Janice: Alexandria tutor
Certified Tutor
For the past six years, I have spent hundreds of hours tutoring students as young as 3 and as old as 65. I especially enjoy working with students one-on-one, and am adept at customizing my lessons to best suit their individual needs. Most tutors demonstrate and explain the answers to given questions and problems; I try to go a few steps further by working to understand my students' thought processes and to actively involve them in solving the problems that have been giving them trouble.
I am a graduate of Earlham College, where I majored in philosophy. In addition, I hold a Masters Degree for teaching social studies from Columbia University, and I pursued advanced graduate studies in philosophy at the University of Toronto, where I taught a few courses in epistemology and served as a graduate assistant for introductory classes in symbolic logic. When in my twenties, I also spent a few years doing research for a college textbook publishing company, working on projects in economics and anthropology. I later focussed on raising my children for about twenty years and then returned to the workforce. I have been working as a museum associate for the past seventeen years, and in addition to giving adult tours, I have been involved in program development and have conducted hundreds of workshops for elementary school children. I have also been teaching ESL for adults once weekly on a volunteer basis for many years.
I am patient and personable and relate well to my students. I am interested in almost everything and, apart from the hard sciences, I am comfortable teaching most subjects. When it comes to test prep, I especially enjoy addressing the reading, English and critical thinking parts of tests at all levels. Working with students on research and writing projects has been gratifying, as has been teaching adult ESL and helping elementary school students overcome the roadblocks they often face in math classes.
