When I was in high school, I struggled to understand what we were really doing in English class. When dissecting literature, I thought to myself, "did the author really mean to include that symbol? Why are we spending so much time talking about it?" I also had difficulty coming up with original thesis statements because, again, I wasn't entirely sure why we were writing thesis statements about books in the first place. Weren't books meant to be enjoyed?
After studying English in college and after teaching middle school and high school English, I understand what I was missing when I was in high school: "The WHY." Understanding that writers write novels for a really big reason has helped me make sense of the work I did as a student and the work I'm doing with my students now. It's our job to delve into these novels and think about them in a specific and focused way so that we can understand ourselves better as humans. It's a beautiful thing!
As your tutor, I'll help you discover "The WHY" as we work on honing your skills as a reader and writer. It's becoming increasingly important, especially in today's tech-driven world, to be a careful reader and writer; let's work together to ensure that you're set up for success!
