Daniel

Certified Tutor

Hi! My name is Daniel. I have been tutoring the reading comprehension, writing/verbal, and essay sections of the SAT, ACT, SSAT, and ISEE for over 4 years now. I also offer academic tutoring and essay assistance. I graduated Cum Laude from NYU in 2012 and have been tutoring ever since. I am originally from Boston, MA.

I enjoy making my tutoring sessions fun and engaging so that I can best motivate my students. I work with my students on a highly personalized basis, and I pride myself on being able to identify their strengths and weaknesses so that I can tailor my teaching style to meet their specific needs. I have been very successful with my previous and current students, helping them to significantly increase their grades, test scores, and self-confidence levels. I also help students with their applications for middle school, high school, and college, many of whom have received thousands of dollars in scholarship.

In my free time, I enjoy writing songs, playing guitar and piano, and going for a run in the park with my black Labrador retriever, Scout. In high school, I was the captain of my football and wrestling teams, so I really connect and empathize with students who have busy after-school schedules. I am always looking forward to working with new students and their families and helping those students to reach their potential.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student has a different learning style, so I identify strengths and weaknesses and then use the method that works best. I also try to make every session as fun and enjoyable as possible!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will typically begin by getting to know my student and understanding his/her needs and personality. Then, depending on the material, I will delve into concepts and/or strategies that will help my student to succeed in their area of study.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My goal is to empower my students by giving them the skill sets necessary to eventually complete the work on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I am able to motivate my students by connecting with them on a personal level and developing a strong rapport. Once we have established trust, I am able to simplify the material in a way that empowers my students so that they quickly learn that their work will lead to success.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Every student has a different learning style (concrete, visual, etc.), and there are unlimited ways that I can present any material. I am a very patient tutor, and I work with my students until I find methods that work best for them. Once the student and I find a method that works, we can then use it to attack any concept, no matter the level of difficulty.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I like to break down the material into small sections or paragraphs. After reading each section together (at the student's pace), we will discuss what parts made sense and what parts still need clarification. I also teach my students how to annotate a passage, how to identify main idea, tone, style, organization, purpose, and how to make inferences, when applicable. Once the student knows the rules to dissect and annotate a passage, he/she can apply those to any passage, with or without a tutor present.
