I believe that knowledge is the only thing in this world that actually matters. With the correct knowledge, one can solve any problem.

I would ask lots of questions to check the student's understanding of the subject, and go from there. I typically like to start by getting to know the student, so that I can communicate to them in a way that they will better understand. After that, I ask the student about their expectations from the tutoring sessions and what they need from me the most going forward.

I can help the student by showing them the things I do on a daily basis to get my own homework done. I can show the student how to effectively read a textbook to get all of the main points out of it. I can also show a student how to do practice problems and use their study time wisely.

I can help keep a student motivated in a variety of ways; it all depends on the student and what motivates them. Some students respond well to deadlines and negative consequences, while others do not. I can help by keeping them accountable for their work, keeping up their grades, and just by being there to help lift them up.

I would stop what I am doing and ask them what it is they are not understanding. I will try my best to explain in a new way, and keep trying to explain the subject in different ways until the student understands. Sometimes this means visualizing a scenario, and other times it means deriving an equation.

I find that having a good basis of communication works best. I always tell my students, "Do not be afraid to ask questions. Do not be afraid to stop me if something I am saying or doing is confusing to you. I am hear for to help you and your learning". I find that this makes student more comfortable knowing that I am willing to explain something 100 times without getting frustrated with them or giving up.

I always try to relate a subject to whatever interests the student. Since I typically tutor math, and most people do not enjoy math, I try to relate mathematical concepts to things that the student participates in or is interested in.

I like to quiz my students. Before the end of a tutoring session, I like to come up with one challenging problem and ask the student to work the problem out without my help first, and if they get stuck along the way, then they can ask questions. I try my best to not give away the answer and really challenge the student to get the answer on their own.

Practice make perfect, especially with subjects such as math and science. The only way to truly understand a mathematical concept is to do the process over and over again. I also am a firm believer in positive reinforcement. Letting a student know they are doing a good job and telling them that they are smart goes a long way.

I like to ask lots and lots of questions. I try to have a conversation about the things they are struggling with. I ask them what their expectations of me are, and then communicate a plan of action going forward with them so that we are on the same page.

It really depends on the situation. If what I am doing is confusing the student more than they were before our session, I will reevaluate my teaching style and try again in a different way. Some students learn better doing hands on things, while others are very good at concept-based learning.

I use the standard pencil, eraser, ruler, calculator and Internet. Anything else that would have to be for a specific use for a student.

I would tell the student to look for key words in a sentence. Next, I would have them tell me what the meaning of all the words they do know is. Then I would ask them to make an educated guess as to what the unknown word means.
