I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a recent college graduate with a goal of becoming a physician. I majored in Neuroscience and and have a passion for math as well. I think a good way to help students learn is to get them to stay motivated by being encouraging and showing them the fun in learning. Everything may seem hard at first, but hard work really does pay off in the end. I think the best way to learn is to be open minded and willing to learn.

My previous tutoring experience includes working with students from China who were taking the TOEFL exam. I like to teach by first letting the student try the problem on their own. Then, I like to go through each step of the problem with the student until they understand. Finally, I let the student try a similar problem on their own to test their understanding. I think it is also a good idea to include visuals/models or examples in order to further explain difficult concepts.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Typically, I use a pen and paper in order to draw pictures or write out the problems/steps. For biology, I think it will be a good idea to perhaps use the materials that we're learning about, such as when learning about the properties of water, using water to demonstrate.
