Don't get too hung up on the fact that you've made mistakes. There was a time when adding 2 digit numbers was the hardest thing you had ever seen. That is not the case now. We learn by trying and by learning from our mistakes.

Ask them what they know, and try different teaching styles to see which one they respond best to.

I always end all techniques by asking them to explain it to me as if I were the student.

By pointing out the small victories and achievements they have made through the session.

I ask them to explain their thought process so I can pinpoint where they are having the most trouble, and then focus on that sub topic.

Reading takes a few times. This is true for those of us who read well also. I feel like patience is one of my best qualities. I try to make people feel comfortable while they are trying to improve their skills.

Asking questions to see how much help they need, and then focusing on the areas that need help.

I would try to build a rapport with them and see what kind of interests or hobbies they have outside of school. I would then try to incorporate what they are learning in those interests.

By asking them to explain what they are thinking while working out problems.

The best way I have found is to simply just ask them what they prefer. I also introduce new techniques of teaching. Sometimes the new techniques work better than they knew it could. Other times, I learn how to teach a new way that was asked of me.
