I am a graduate of The Ohio State University where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Since graduating I have presented at many conferences, including the Society of Psychophysiological Research annual meeting in Florence, Italy. Before moving to Chicago I also volunteered on a suicide prevention hotline. Since moving to Chicago I have been working as a guest teacher for charter schools throughout the area. As such, I feel most comfortable working with individuals in grades K-8, though I also have experience working with high schoolers.

When not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy cooking, baking, and trying coffee at different third-wave coffee shops around the area!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I prefer to contact students beforehand to get an idea of what they need to get out of a session. However, I think the first part of an initial session should be spent quickly going over those goals and ideas and laying out a path of how to achieve them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving them the tools to solve problems on their own. Tutoring is not about giving the correct answer, but about how to get to the answer.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By emphasizing the positive feeling that comes along with being able to confidently face and answer a problem on their own! Also, maybe candy, sometimes.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Perhaps by relating it to the "real world", or sharing an interesting story or factoid about the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Perhaps a mini-quiz or a review. It is also helpful to have students explain the concept back to me.
