What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone has the ability to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce ourselves, learn about interests, discuss focus of the tutoring sessions, and get started!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach them ways to discover answers and encourage them to keep trying, even when things are difficult.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Remind them of their goals and encourage them not to give up.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Evaluate the level of their reading, making sure it is appropriate. Teach them to break sentences down into understandable phrases and look up definitions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Asking questions about their learning style to find out ways that work best for them. Listen to their struggles, and adapt the approach to meet their needs. Offer them reassurance that they will be successful, and we will keep working until they understand the concepts or get the desired outcome.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Associate it to something real in their life, or explore possibilities for future applications that are interesting to them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

An exit ticket is a good way to test understanding. Give a problem or ask a question that requires demonstration of mastery.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Break down problems, and give enough examples or different approaches that help the student achieve small successes that lead to solving bigger problems.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

If a child, speak to the parent and the child. Observe and evaluate over a few sessions. Keep asking questions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I take into account their learning style, and tailor the content and delivery.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on the subject. Pen and paper, whiteboard with erasable markers, manipulatives, timer, calculator, etc.
