What is your teaching philosophy?
I hope to assist every student that I work with to bring out the best in himself or herself through making sincere attempts to learn from errors, and to use strengths to master overcoming challenges.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
We would get to know motivates them, any particular interests he/she has that can relate to the subject being covered and what area of a subject needs specific focus on mastery or better familiarity.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By focusing on strengths in an area, we can gradually build confidence to take on the more challenging material / topics and practice, role play and review it together with the goal of having the student be able to respond to and resolve a problem or question independently.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I think the best answer would be to break it down into concepts or ideas the student can comprehend. Start with the core, and work our way to seeing the big picture as we proceed through our sessions.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I prefer to start with the core or focus of the story or section, and identify key concepts/ideas that may need addressing at the student's pace as we work our way toward better comprehension of the overall piece.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Listening to the student's concerns and questions, clarifying concepts and ideas in terms he/she can better relate to and understand, and eventually asking comprehensive questions on the topic or lesson to gauge progress.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Focus on what the student already knows and build upon those strengths toward better understanding as well as making connections to interests and real-world events the student can relate to.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
As a language teacher, I enjoy role playing in the target language to best gauge comprehension and improvement.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Be sincere and honest with each student. Give praise only when it merits it, and support when the going gets tough.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I prefer to use on the spot quizzes, challenging questions as well as use role-playing scenarios.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I am open to modifying a session to the student's needs. He or she is the beneficiary of any assistance I can provide, ethically and within reason. Their success is my goal.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Media of various kinds, and whatever the student supplies to work with per their school / homeschool curriculum.
